Steelhead Posted August 3, 2020 Posted August 3, 2020 Hope everyone is doing well. I'm looking for in depth rod reviews either in text or video. There's a lot more detailed fly rod reviews than conventional bass spinning and casting rod reviews. I also flyfish so I'm not complaining. There's quite a few independent fly shops that do fantastic reviews and shootouts. Tackle Tour does great rod reviews but they're far and few between doing reel, tackle and accessories reviews as well. There seems to be a lot more spinning and casting reel reviews than rods. I'm more of a rod enthusiast. I wanted to ask you guys if you know of any websites that do in depth bass rod reviews? 1 Quote
Super User Spankey Posted August 3, 2020 Super User Posted August 3, 2020 I think *** does them. They give decent reviews. Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted August 4, 2020 Super User Posted August 4, 2020 I've looked and looked for ***, but can't find them. Quote
bwjay Posted August 4, 2020 Posted August 4, 2020 There's a BassResource member, @punch, that does high end rod reviews on YouTube. His channel is called "PunchFishing". It's mostly Megabass and Shimano/Loomis and he doesn't have a ton of reviews, but he does go into a fair bit of depth. Not exactly the most scientific but he doesn't review something unless he has a good bit of time using it. I hate when people get something in the mail and do a "review". They couldn't possibly know if it's worth the money or good for why they bought it without time using it. I like his reviews because if you watch, it's pretty obvious he has used everything he talks about. (Thanks for the insights Brian!) 4 Quote

I agree, he does put the time on the water with the rods. He seems like a genuine, down-to-earth guy who has a passion. Quote

Often times when it comes to high end rods, the reviews are kind of subjective. To maximize some rods potential, you need the right reel, line and often times the specific lure the rod is made for. Also, the more a rod company claims (Favorite for example), the more it is all just fluff and window dressing so an in-depth review can be meaningless. Quote

I just enjoy reading opinions on any bass and fly rods. I realize all reviews are subjective. I use high end rods both for bassin' and flyfishing and rod specifications/recommendations are usually located on the blank though there is some exceptions and rod manufacturers mostly go into more detail on their websites. It also comes down to the anglers' experience and personal preferences. There's not much difference when it comes to reel and line preferences for both bass and fly rods. However, in my experience, matching fly lines to fly rods is more challenging and definitely more expensive especially for double-handed fly rods(Spey, Scandi, Skagit & switch). IMHO, fly lines have had the most advancements in the flyfishing industry in the last 25 years. I can could into in depth details on this subject but I digress. I respectively disagree that an in depth rod review is meaningless. Sure, some reviews the author will throw in some irrelevant information but then again it depends on the reader/viewer to interpret it if it is valuable information or just a bunch of B.S. Bottom line, I get what you're saying and I agree with most of it. It's not easy to assess one's knowledge on subjects on a Internet forum unless they're frequent contributors. From your posts that I have read I think you have lots of experience and knowledge and value your comments and opinions. Quote
