Super User WRB Posted August 4, 2020 Super User Posted August 4, 2020 Shot guns come in the same models with different grades; field, pigeon, Midas for standard price, mid price and top price with different grade wood, engraving and balance. Fishing reels don’t use the simple grades, they change models that use similar or the same parts, reduced weight and mfg location tends to drive price. If you are a Midas buyer wanting top grade you know what you are getting and so does everyone else. Reels are more subjective, user preference with debatable performance improvement. Tom 1
Global Moderator TnRiver46 Posted August 4, 2020 Global Moderator Posted August 4, 2020 How much money ya got? I’ve been out fished and out casted by people using Mountain Dew bottles as rods and/or reels and line they salvaged out of the Rip rap they were standing on. It’s all a matter of how much you want to spend and how bad you need the fish . When eating dinner depends on successful catching, people will surprise you 1

And then there are the folks crabbing about spending over $100 on a reel. I get it, for some it is a matter of budget. For the others. I don't know, I guess they value money above all else. I have motorcycles that cost far more than most rifles and pistols. You kinda have to keep it apples to apples or it becomes meaningless.
Super User Bankc Posted August 4, 2020 Super User Posted August 4, 2020 For me, it's because money always has a way of spending itself. And if you don't spend it on the stuff you want and enjoy, it winds up getting spent on the stuff you don't enjoy, but need. 1
Shimano_1 Posted August 4, 2020 Posted August 4, 2020 I totally believe its user preference. They are nicer and definitely make the experience a little more desirable. I personally have always set my limit at 200 bucks and have been pleasantly pleased with most. Is a metanium nicer than the slx? Absolutely! Is it 300 dollars nicer? I dont think there's any way it can be. Ive got a few curado k reels and see no reason for anything any more expensive. The tatula sv reels are great as well. If one has the funds to comfortably afford high high end gear and wants it who am i to judge or even care. I don't even want to own anything really expensive because if it did seem that much better id be tempted to buy several more. Ive used a buddies metanium and it was definitely a sweet reel but didn't blow me away like I felt a 400 dollar reel should. I dont believe anyone should go the high end route expecting it to help their fishing.....just makes the fishing possibly more enjoyable 1

You kinda have to keep it apples to apples or it becomes meaningless. It IS apples to apples. In all cases we are talking about things that are bought because we like them. They are discretionary purchases. Unless you make your living riding a motorcycle, hunting big game, or bass fishing, these things are all "hobby" type of purchases. If you NEED a rifle on the cheap, you can get a Savage or CZ for well under $1000 that will do everything you need it to do, or a plastic service pistol for under $500. But some of us choose to buy fine old Mausers and finely tuned Les Baer pistols instead. It is all about where we, as individuals choose to spend our money. I'd bet dollars to doughnuts that among the folks on this forum who argue that buying the best reels are a waste of money, there are a good many that don't have a problem with buying expensive trucks, or spending a fortune on a McMansion or even thousands on landscaping that mostly benefits the neighbors. Don't get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with any of these things. I just wish that people would see that it is simply choices we make instead of thinking that the things they do are perfectly sensible and the things others might choose instead are a waste of money. 1
