I have my Sierra 734c. mated to a 7:3:1 bait cast reel which I use for worms and jigs mainly . I believe you will find more applications will favor a 7:3:1 gear ratio reel when matched with the 734C. such as buzz baits and toads . *I do have and use a 6:3:1 reel , but not on the 734c. 1 Quote
Pogues2300 Posted August 2, 2020 Posted August 2, 2020 I personally have switched to 8:1 For every technique. I have no issue slowing down my retrieve. I think the thought that you need lower gear ratio for power has changed with new technology. But I'm no expert by any means. Quote
5by3 Posted August 2, 2020 Posted August 2, 2020 6.3:1. Easier to speed up than slow down in my opinion. 1 Quote
LCG Posted August 2, 2020 Posted August 2, 2020 I would opt for the 7.3:1, can speed up or slow down. Pretty versatile I think. Quote
Dens228 Posted August 2, 2020 Posted August 2, 2020 I opt for a 6:3.1 also, for the same reason as above. I find it easier to reel faster than to reel slower. Quote
Di_ver_gent Posted August 2, 2020 Author Posted August 2, 2020 Thanks for the responses. Kind of 50/50 on which reel. The 7.3 is 29.4” and 6.3 is 25.7”. This is actually my first casting setup. I’m just try to get a good all around setup until I know what I like and what works in my area. Pnw Washington. Quote
Super User FishTank Posted August 2, 2020 Super User Posted August 2, 2020 6.3:1 would be my choice. You can use it for just about anything. Quote
Super User Hammer 4 Posted August 2, 2020 Super User Posted August 2, 2020 I'd go for the 6.3:1 also..good all around speed. Quote

Super User ChrisD46 Posted August 3, 2020 Super User Posted August 3, 2020 *A lot depends on what you like to throw : Jigs , worms , pitching , flipping - essentially lures you move with your rod will favor a faster retrieve speed reel (7:3:1+) ... For crank baits , spinner baits , chatter baits , wake baits , etc. with a straight retrieve then a slower 6:3:1 retrieve speed reel is preferred . If you had to pick only one then you can certainly get by with a 6:3:1 reel . Quote
