Recently went up to 50lb braid frogging heavy cover.. at first it was fine casting.. last 2 outings I have had the worst backlashes I have ever had,,, massive dig in’s . Most of my reels are spooled with braid and have zero issues. Are my frog’s not creating enough drag when reeling in with the 50lb braid and not re creating a tight spoil? It seems tight but this dig in is massive.. I don’t have any problems with the 15/20 and 30lb braid I throw. I tightened up my spool to no side to side which I have usually have a lil side to side. Tightened my brakes a little to and still having these backlashes. It’s not on every cast but a couple times a hour. I just don’t get it.. I never have these problems with braid.

This sounds like the main issue to me. If I've spent the day casting frogs or other light lures on my braid, part of my 'after trip maintenance' is to unspool a good amount then reel it back in under good tension.

   This is good advice.   ^^^^

Also check the shim underneath the cast control cap to make sure it isn't wearing thin.       jj

Sounds about right to me, when walking a frog the rod works the bait and the reel picks up the slack line.

I just have not experienced this problem with lighter braid walking frogs.

I use 50 lb braid for frogging, even with a new rod and reel, I've not had any issues.

I'm wondering what brand braid your using, and if it's possible you may have got a "bad" spool.?

Regular Power Pro. Just got home from a quick dusk trip  . Before I went out I hooked onto a lil branch and walked it out probably 75 yards and spooled back up tight. Same thing. Backlash and massive dig in. I know how to cast and set up a bait caster lol so I don’t get it .. Like I’ve said prior I haven’t had these issues before with any braid for anything I’m throwing. Probably just going to unspool and try another spool of the same and see what happens.

Wow - I'm lost now as I use 50# Power Pro on my frog rig and haven't had that issue.

"Line-burrowing" is typically a 2-part process (fortunately it’s easily avoided)

PART-1

The line is spooled too loosely on the reel

  > This can occur at home, when the line was initially spooled on the reel (inadequate line tension)

  > More commonly, it happens when retrieving a lure with twitches or pops that lay loose coils on the spool.

  > It can also occur when fishing a lightweight lure on a rod rated for heavier lures

PART-2

Heavy pressure is then applied to loosely spooled line

  > Heavy pressure occurs during a powerful hook-set

  > Fishing with a ‘locked down’ drag is NG, because it takes the drag out of the equation.

  > The most extreme pressure occurs when the lure gets snagged, and the angler gets angry.

Hense I’m just going to remove and respool. Sure it’s a easy remedy .. just frustrating cause I know it’s something stupid and can’t figure it out. I am going to respool new line though, even though this line is new .

One thing that might help - put on backing. I've only got about 60 yds of the 50# PP on top of 10# Big Game. Cheaper in the long run and does help prevent dig-in. Plus if you have to replace the braid, it's only the 60 yds instead of a full spool-worth.

Respooled with another spool of 50lb Power pro. All is well. When I spooled first time I know I spooled it tight. So no idea what it was but landed a nice 3lb er on first cast that fought like a big boy . Pretty cool walking across thin layer of Algae in shallows and you can anticipate the hit as u see the scum rippling towards the frog .

I think I have a cused spool of 50lb Power Pro.  I have it on two reels and I have never had such issues with both dig-in and break-offs on the cast.  I have pulled line off and tested it in my yard and it seem to break as it should so idk what is going on.  I have been using 40lb PP for years across a bunch of combos and never had an issue.  The cursed spool is empty now and once I am findished with the line still spooled up I am heading back to the 40lb for good.

Are both reels off the same spool? If so ,, as u just probably read I respooled with new 50lb Line and it’s fine now. I’m sure some will say I probably didn’t spool it tight enough but that’s not the case, I know it was spooled tight . With the new line I put on I was able to set my reel like I usually do as well.

They’re both off the same spool and in one case the specific yardage of line was bounced from one reel to the other.

The only other factor is that instead of my normal dark green braid I decided to spice things up with some vermilion red, but I cannot think a different dye would effect anything.

Braid and I have never had a loving relationship and I only use 50lb Sufix 832 on the frog set up, but just to be sure it behaves I throw the frogs out with more of an underhand  lob than a wing ding let er rip cast and it works well.
