basser27 Posted July 30, 2020 Posted July 30, 2020 Ive been using 6lb Fireline a few trips now on a light rod. Is it normal for this stuff to look fuzzy/frayed looking? I’ve been pulling on it and the knots seem to be holding fine and haven’t had any breaks but I’m used to power pro Quote

Super User J Francho Posted July 30, 2020 Super User Posted July 30, 2020 I can confirm that it gets a little frizzy. If it looks really bad near the bait, I'll retie. Quote
aquaholik Posted July 30, 2020 Posted July 30, 2020 Normal. Great line but it gets fuzzy near the lure and you do have to cut it off often to maintain full strength. Quote
Super User OkobojiEagle Posted July 30, 2020 Super User Posted July 30, 2020 fuzzy isn't a problem, but if you see a frayed fiber or two cut above the frayed portion... oe Quote
Super User FishTank Posted July 30, 2020 Super User Posted July 30, 2020 I used this stuff years ago. It was OK until it wasn't. What you are getting seems normal. I am not a fan of this line in general. The best advice I can give is, once you have reached your end with this line go to something else. Quote

onenutinthewater Posted July 31, 2020 Posted July 31, 2020 Try the Fireline Ultra 8- Best line i have found for bigger fish ( salmon & steel head) I have a few reels with 100+ days on the water. Quote
Super User JustJames Posted July 31, 2020 Super User Posted July 31, 2020 Do you use any leader at all? I don’t use Fireline but use Nanofil very similar with a few setups. I always have leader tie on since this type line have no abrasion resistance whatsoever. I use 4 and 6 for panfish, 8 and 12 for bass. If you always drag something on bottom I think braid might be a better choice. If you want smooth braid, try 8 stands braid like Sufix 832. Quote

How much different is the ultra 8 vs the original fused? I’ve used 14 and 20lb original for years surf fishing and most recently have been using 6lb crystal original on my light rod for panfish/trout. For years I used 4lb mono for this application but wanted to try a superline/braid and have been pleased with the original crystal Quote
Super User J Francho Posted July 31, 2020 Super User Posted July 31, 2020 They aren't even the same category of line. Neither stretch. Quote

Same strength to diameter ratio but weaker FG knot strength. Your 6 lbs Fireline Crystal true unknotted breaking strength is around 16 lbs. Quote

Answered already. You'd have to feel them both in the store to really see the differences. 7 minutes ago, aquaholik said: 4 strand original crystal Based on the fraying, I'd say he was referring to fused line, not a braid. aquaholik Posted July 31, 2020 Posted July 31, 2020 The original "fused" Fireline crystal or black or fluorescent is made using 4 strands. They're very easy to separate. The ultra 8 is made of 8 strands. Also fused but harder to separate into 8 strands but it's 8 strands. More durable and longer lasting. Just poor FG knot strength for some reason. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted July 31, 2020 Super User Posted July 31, 2020 Never heard that fused was 4-carrier nor that was braided. I'll take your word for it, tho. It feels and behaves nothing like a braided line. Whatever braid was before Ultra 8 was also an 8 carrier. I haven't use the Ultra 8. I don't care for 8 carrier lines in general. All my knots are sketchy with it, and gets stuck in thick veggies more. If you're a braid only type, then I'd say 8 carrier is probably better for open water and moving baits. Not my jam, tho. Quote

It's confusing because Berkley did make Fireline Braid 5 or 6 years ago. The original Fireline Black and later Fireline Crystal are advertised as "fused" but you can easily cut it with a nail clipper and separate it into 4 strands that are "braided" together and then fused with some sort of waxy coating. Nanofil is a unifilament. I can't separate it into strands. 1 Quote
Super User JustJames Posted July 31, 2020 Super User Posted July 31, 2020 So how is Ultra8 compare to Nanofil? So far I like nanofil for it super light weight and casting distance on lightweight lure (trout magnet) and also it sink slower than braid, so it is good for shallow fishing. Quote
aquaholik Posted July 31, 2020 Posted July 31, 2020 Nanofil is still smoother and rounder than Ultra 8. Ultra 8 has great strength to diameter ratio. Slightly better than Nanofil but the FG knot strength is poor. Example Ultra 8 in 10 lbs unknotted strength is 27 lbs but FG knot strength is about 17-18 lbs compare to original Crystal fused (4 strand) which comes in at 29 lbs and FG knot strength of 24-25 lbs. If you're using FG knot with a leader and need distance, go with Nanofil. You want something that last longer without getting fuzzy and fraying real quick then go with Ultra 8. I actually love Nanofil 14 lbs on my Alpha SV 105. It behaves like 6-8 lbs mono on the cast but of course no stretch and phenomenal slack line sensitivity. I use it for Sheepshead and Pompano jigging. I use Fireline Crystal on my 4000 Stradic FK for structure fishing since it's so strong. Quote
