Villagenut Posted July 30, 2020 Posted July 30, 2020 In you all's opinion, what is "the next big thing" in marine electronics. I guess in my opinion the hummingbird 360 and garmin livescope have been the biggest developments over the last few years. So whats next? Will it be something totally new. Will be be updates to these system. Just curious as to what you think? Quote
Super User Tennessee Boy Posted July 30, 2020 Super User Posted July 30, 2020 I think for the next few years we will see continued improvement in the technologies like 360 and Livescope that let you look out will fishing. I think we will see something that merges the best of both technologies. The ability to see all around you like 360 but live like Livescope should be the next big thing. Garmin's new horizontal mount for the Livescope transducer is a small step in that direction. Quote

TigerBassAU Posted August 2, 2020 Posted August 2, 2020 360 Live is coming. But Garmin has a lot of advanced technology and they are only slowly releasing what to have to max their profits. Quote

Have you heard an rumors as to when they might release 360 live. i was out of fishing for a while but now slowly upgrading everything. I don’t have livescope yet and was planning to purchase that next year. Quote

I was told gen4 Helix is coming and with a 15 inch option (my guess for next announcement following the 2 year release trend). I was told they have 360 Live now but not how close they are in a finalized product for release. Dual processors in the units will be key for 360 Live due to processing power needed (gen3 +??) After fishing the mega 360 last week I am also looking to upgrade but will wait for gen4 units to be released to see how much more powerful they are over the gen3 +. Since they just released mega 360 I do not think they will release Live until late 2021 or 2022 based on their 2 year release trends if it is a new hardware upgrade BUT if it is software/add-on for mega 360 it could come sooner! Again, this is only my speculation but it would seem only sonar speed and processing power is holding live 360 back. The real question is if humminbird will milk it by only releasing non mega 360 live first and drag it out over more time to sell more products. I hope the competition Garmin brings will speed up it's release and hopefully it will be mega quality on day 1! Quote
Super User scaleface Posted August 2, 2020 Super User Posted August 2, 2020 Watching Brandon Pauliniuk catch these huge smallmouth using his Mega 360 makes me feel like Fred Flintstone with my downscan and marker buoys . 2 1 Quote
Heartland Posted August 2, 2020 Posted August 2, 2020 Before long they will have a rod holder that is controlled by the fish finder that automatically selects and positions your rod to the location of the most promising fish. These electronics have made the SPORT of fishing less fun to watch in my opinion. 1 Quote

All the electronics in the world can't make fish bite. All they can do is lead you to the fish. I love fishing. If I never saw a fishing show again in my life, it wouldn't matter one way or another. schplurg Posted August 11, 2020 Posted August 11, 2020 I just stick a GoPro 360 under my yak and I can see everything in 4K baby!!! Got it all hooked up to a VR helmet! These fish finder makers are stupid with all their ancient laser beam and sonar "technology"! 1 2 Quote
Craig P Posted August 14, 2020 Posted August 14, 2020 I think the next big thing is going to be headless fish finders. Take Livescope for example. The GLS10 does the processing, the attached fish finder is a viewing / interactive interface. There is no reason this approach cannot be used completely with an iPad or Android Tablet and the processor or "brain" of the system can be remotely and securely mounted within the boat while you place your tablet screen wirelessly anywhere you want, multiples screens as well. Sharing the screen to a finder is already available on some finders, I see this as a competitive next step and a feature that the first to market could really grow on. Quote

I was actually researching connecting my ipad to my gen3 yesterday. This makes total sense for "usefulness" but from a manufacture standpoint, can i increase the price of the "brain" enough to make up for the lost revenue of the head unit. I do not own livescope but if this type of brain was available today, i would probably buy one tomorrow (if they didn't push the price point too high) Quote

Manufacturers would save money on the panels and the housings so they “could” pass on savings to the consumer. The first who does, the pricing will be “just” attractive enough to sway you....the rest, they’ll keep for sure. Quote
Super User Boomstick Posted August 14, 2020 Super User Posted August 14, 2020 Well I think it is safe to say we wiill continue to see sharper imaging, higher resolution screens and so forth, but what I am waiting for is a virtual 3-D view that would overlays things like weeds or fish at the bottom over the top of the water when you look at them. That might be a little ways away still, but I would say in 10-20 years that should be a thing. If it's not in development in the next 5, I may seriously consider starting my own company. Quote

Heads up display in Costa glasses that's controlled by voice commands. Solves several problems, cuts weight by removing heavy displays, lessens chance of displays being borrowed, and opens up line of sight for the driver. 1 Quote
jbmaine Posted August 15, 2020 Posted August 15, 2020 I would not be surprised to someday see someone pull up to the boat launch, release a fleet of drones, and have them sonar dip across the lake while he gets his boat ready. By the time he hits the water he will have real time info on where to go for the most, largest, fish. Quote
