Does anyone have an opinion on this reel. I have a chance to get a really clean one for $125. Worth it?ald.png.e01e3d6b6fb7d0b3e97d898b6c67cbe4.png

Buy it, that one of the best reel available. It just like the core version in Japan. I still felt bad that I sold that reel. If you don’t want it, tell me where.

You ever fish a Core 50mg7? Yes it's worth it.

I'm not familiar with the Core 50

It is super light weight reel, frame is magnesium, super smooth compare to those of Daiwa or newer shimano. It is also one of smallest reel (you might not like it if you have big hand). The 50 spool size is great for Light line and finesse fishing, weightless trick worm, 1/4oz lure, but powerful enough to fish jig or chatterbait. In another word, I use this reel for everything.

The con, since it is old reel then there is no external adjustment, but a lot seem to like old VBS set it and forget it better. The 50 size spool will limit you on line size 12lb hybrid about 80-90yds.

weightless worm.

1/4oz Finesse Jig.

Mint Core 50's still fetch near retail price from when they were new. That's a heck of a little reel. Probably the most comfortable platform Shimano ever made too.

Same frame the Curado 50E & Scorpion XT 1000 is built on except it's a magnesium frame. That Aldebaran is the JDM equivalent of the Core 50. If you've ever held a Curado 70 or SLX they're very similar in size but palm a little different and sit lower on the reel seat. I might be biased since they're a personal favorite of mine but I have some 50 platform reels and still prefer how they palm, how simple they are to use and how they perform compared to my newer Shimano's. For $125 I wouldn't hesitate and if you find out you don't like it than you'd be able to sell it fast without losing anything. I'd probably buy it just to have another.

How would it work with 8 or 10lb FC, or 20lb braid?

8-10lb FC I would say perfect. 20lb braid, I never tired that small but if you plan to throw only lightweight lure, you should be fine.

I ended up with two of these reels. After a few years on them I agree with the general consensus on BR. I use both with 20lb Sufix 832 for light cranks, shaky heads, small underspins, and light top water stuff. Just got done breaking both down and cleaning them, and a re-grease. They are such simple reels, but there is something about them that is just so smooth and solid feeling. Must be the general design. Great reels!

I've got a Core 50 that I put on a Shimano Cumulus rod.  It makes a great outfit.  A 20 year old outfit that can as nice to use as the latest products

Still worth it next to their newer offerings? One has come up for sale locally. I'm considering.
