I've heard people say they leave it on and others say they shut it off . I shut it off , but once I forgot to shut it off drove home and left it on the next day I freaked out but there was no harm done .

turn mine on when I launch. shut them off when I trailer.

Don't know many people that shut them off while on the water. in 30 years of having hummingbirds with a trolling motor mounted transducer. I have never had one go out.

Actually I have had 3 break, but that is from smacking them on rocks or trees.

Your graph should have standby mode. Hit the power button once and it will be on the bottom of the list that pops up. At least both my helix units have this. I always just put on standby when I pull TM to move. This stops the transducer ping but allows graph to stay on safely

It depends on the model, but for most transducers designed for freshwater, i.e. lower wattage models that aren't designed to measure down thousands of feet, should be fine if run out of the water.  It's just a speaker and a microphone.  The only reason that some need water is to help cool them down because the speaker portion of it is so powerful that it's generates enough heat to damage itself.  Though, keep in mind, a lot of transducers are mounted on the inside of the hull, so they likely on get wet if there's leak and the bilge pump isn't able to keep up.  So they operate fine and spend most of their working lives dry.

It would probably be a good idea to contact the manufacturer to make sure on this.  They're the only ones who would know for sure.  But I pull my transducer (Lowrance triple shot) out of the water all of the time and let it run.  It's never hurt it, and I doubt it ever would as it's only about 500 watts.

Russ,

Sounds like some people just want to dream up crap to worry about, don't it?

Must be WuFlu.

I've never turned off a sonar while running.  Never fished with anyone who did.  Not even an old Super Sixty.  That's how long I've been doing it.
