Haven't caught a bass since June 1st

Been out numerous times from the bank which is very selective in my parts (too much lake front property)  Anyways i forgot what it feels like to catch a bass.

No bass for almost two months? That's pretty rough. It's been tough for me this month but even on the slowest days I usually manage 3 or 4.

Good point, but I really miss it.  I do say a bad day of fishing beats the best day of work.

So is the hottest, miserable part of the middle of the day if you have some access to a few shades spots, most guys/gals aren't going to subject themselves to the heat, but I have caught a lot of fish this summer by just fishing through times of day everyone else refuses to go in, there's 5-6 real nice spots for fish to hide in and hunt the transition from light to shadow and other than myself on lunch I've never seen anybody else pressure these spots mid day, might be worth a try if it works for your schedule

I've been having a rough summer here in mid Florida compared to right after the spawn but after doing some research was able to recover. The other day went out in the morning on a large pond, and using a 5" watermelon senko, (slow retrieve) weightless, was able to pull in nine bass in about two hours. They weren't the big boys we were catching after the spawn but still the results helped our morale. ? 

 

To me, its about the right bait, right conditions, right time and finding the fish? 

 

Keep researching and working different baits and techniques until it all comes together. ?

Yeah, I only fish early morning or late at night, this time of year. The most fun part is, You double the feeling of excitement with the bite when you don’t see it.

I got skunked 4 days in a row at one location a few months back  , the 5th day was fantastic because I threw in the towel and fished somewhere else . Like the song says..you have to know when to walk away .

thanks for the tips.  I have been mixing up my bait selection.  I usually bring 5-6 rods with me during my bank trips.

I take 1 rod .Mobility ,to me , is more important than being loaded down with gear .

Not sure where your located but most streams across America hold smallmouth. Go wading catch some fish and stay cooled off. Very simple to catch creek smallies. A simple jighead and twister tail is hard to beat

If I am in a place where I have lots of access to bank I always take 2 rods, 1 MHF or MF casting, and a MF spinning, your definitely right from my experience that covering water will almost always produce more fish than trying to catch every fish in one place, but when I am somewhere that terrain/property restrictions limit my access to bank, I am apt to lay out lots of rods and thoroughly comb whatever areas I do have access to, multiple different styles of lure at each broad category in the water column until I find fish, or get convinced that they simply aren't holding where I can reach...not sure which I like "better" but I can say that every time I break my PB it happens when I thoroughly fish an area top to bottom with multiple lures in multiple colors, but I almost always have a busier day catching them when I can move

Akron Ohio, I went to Kent for undergrad and grad school, also coached football at Kent in the 70's.  I used to fish a small lake over by the power plant by the Rusty Nail Restaurant in Kent.  Always caught bass there.  Also the dam area north of Kent on the Cuyahoga River.  

This time of year I would downsize to a 4" senko watermelon red and fish very slow, the slower the better.  Also the reserve in Ravenna, and Turkeyfoot park in the Portage Lakes.  I have caught nice bass at Turkeyfoot.  Good luck, down size and slow down.

the river still produces but it looks way different with the dams coming down.  not sure of the lake youare talking about, but most lakes around there now is surrounded by private property

Just looked at your profile and seen your around Akron. There is a canal right off 93 between long lake and Nesmith lake. That canal is full of bass and some good ones to boot. A weightless worm and a frog will get you on some fish. The towpath runs along the canal for as far as you want to walk. We have also kayaked it and was able to cover a lot of water and catch plenty of fish. 

 

 40 min south of Akron is sugar Creek. Fish it in the strasburg area and catch a bunch of smallies. Also the tusc is full of smallmouth as well. Anywhere around canal Fulton down to massillon is good. Pop r and buzzbaits usually produce on that stretch. If you would like some more info on spot PM me

Got out on a boat with my friend om West Branch. I got two keepers which made my day. It is a tough lake.

I haven't caught a bass on a slow moving bait like soft plastics since a week and a half ago. All my fish have been reaction bites by burning baits and nothing else. My last actual bass was caught this past Tuesday. The dog days of summer are here. If this continues where they don't want nothing to do with finesse/slow baits it's gonna be a tough month of fishing.

Hold up, you were fishing a senko in the 70’s? A man ahead of his time ?

Absolutely not, back in the 70's I used creme worms, but since I visit the area every year and have a family friend that is part owner of Turkeyfoot golf course and lives on the lake, I fish the area at least once a year.  The advice I was giving you was from recent trips.  4" senko will work almost anywhere in the country.

If you have access or can find a spot, try to find some small creeks with moving water you can wade in ... I bring a short rod/s medium/fast no bigger than 6 ft. to get around easily. Small worms, spinners and top water have worked well for me -- spinning and bait casting... 

 

bass usually not big where I go ... a 3 pounder is a monster and rare  ...but fun and aggressive  ...

 

Be careful if you do ... some creeks have strong currents and holes ...

So did your luck ever turn around?

 

I actually had a similar drought that I think went from later June to mid July. After that, the bite picked up a little bit, and I got a few in August but unfortunately due to gout in my foot, I've only made it out once since that - but still got four that day and one was a good one!
