MUSLENUTZ Posted July 25, 2020 Posted July 25, 2020 How does this set up work for long casting finesse fishing from the bank around cover work? How will it be with knots? I use the Alberto usually to connect the leader. Going to use this on spinning gear. I usually fish straight fluro. Quote
Super User Tywithay Posted July 25, 2020 Super User Posted July 25, 2020 I find it difficult to get a good knot with extremely thin braid and larger fluoro. It's doable, but I avoid it personally. 1 Quote

Spooling up the new reel soon, I’m tempted to just go straight fluro so if I have to re tie the baitcaster leader I don’t have to retie two rods. Quote
Super User RoLo Posted July 25, 2020 Super User Posted July 25, 2020 Unless you're fishing around rocks or shellbeds, I'd be tempted to go straight braid. Roger Quote
Super User MickD Posted July 25, 2020 Super User Posted July 25, 2020 The situation where the braid is smaller than the leader is universal, that's the case all the time. Your proposal in the original post should work fine. If you are getting too many break-offs then go up on both line and leader. If you have to go above 15, I will be surprised. Go to 20 and casting distance will certainly be affected negatively. I usually use .006 dia braid with .012 leader and don't recognize any problems. Also Alberto, sometimes FG. 1 Quote
waymont Posted July 25, 2020 Posted July 25, 2020 I use 10lb braid to 10-12 leaders all the time with no issues. I however only tie the FG knot. 1 1 Quote
Super User JustJames Posted July 25, 2020 Super User Posted July 25, 2020 It should work fine, Most of my finesse outfits 8-10lb braid with 8lb Izorline or 10-12lb abrazx. I only use double uni knot 6-7 wraps on braid 4-5 wraps on leader. I only fish finesse type in open water, around rock/rip rap and docks area. BUT how long do you wanna cast out and what type of cover? Thin braid doesn’t have much abrasions resistance. Also with long cast, you might have a lot more of miss hook set. The 10-12lb FC leader is good but problem is the thin braid and soft tip on finesse type spinning rod. You might have to up size your braid to 15-20lb with MH spinning rod to fish around cover 8lb Nanofil + 8lb izorline. Quote
Super User MickD Posted July 26, 2020 Super User Posted July 26, 2020 Whether the braid is 10 pound test or 20 pound test will make no difference on hook set on long casts unless the 10 is breaking on the set. Which it most likely won't. It will make no difference since both lines will have essentially zero stretch. Abrasion resistance might be a different story. Try it. If you need to make changes, make them. But this will be the longest casting setup. The rod power should be matched to the lure weight you plan to cast,, in order for it to load properly. Quote
Super User JustJames Posted July 26, 2020 Super User Posted July 26, 2020 @MickDI recommended up size braid because he fish in cover not for long cast hook set. Man I should go back and learn how to speak English all over again. Quote

Roger Fish see the braid where I fish. 3-5lbs is the max we see up here on average. 4 hours ago, Bass_Fishing_Socal said: @MickDI recommended up size braid because he fish in cover not for long cast hook set.
