shmill27 Posted July 23, 2020 Posted July 23, 2020 If I can only have 2 baitcasters what are the best powers, lenghth and actions and gear ratios on reels? Quote
shimando Posted July 23, 2020 Posted July 23, 2020 At least one of the two should be a Medium Heavy ~7' rod with a ~7 gear ratio. In regards to a second setup, you have two ways of approaching this. What I personally did is get a duplicate setup so that I can have two lures/rigs tied up so I can switch easily on the water. The other approach is to get a completely different set up to cover techniques that the other rod may not handle as well. You could either go to a lighter Medium with a reel like a Tatula SV to handle lighter lures or get a heavy rod that you can use for frogging and big swimbaits. Quote

Excellent question, but one with many possible answers. What type of water are you fishing? Deep clear waters or shallow murky waters? Cover? Favorite lures you fish? Do you fish from shore or a boat? Etc. Gear ratios are flexible. Maybe even more so than rod selection. Ratios have gotten faster and many like faster. What was fast 10 years ago is in the middle speeds now. Personally I would like a 7'2" MHF with a ratio in the 7s and a 7' MF with a ratio in the 6s...preferably low 6s. 1 Quote

mrpao Posted July 24, 2020 Posted July 24, 2020 Like mentioned above, it depends on what you plan to do with the rods and reels. This is like asking, what's the two best vehicles I should buy. It's going to be different for everyone, because everyone has different needs. Quote
Hulkster Posted July 24, 2020 Posted July 24, 2020 i carry two rods with me all the time. one is a 7'6 MH G. Loomis E6X MBR903C with curado 200i and 12 pound test mono the other is actually a spinning rod, Loomis JWR892S with stradic 3000FK with 10 pound mono. I use the spinning rod for lighter stuff and the baitcaster for heavier presentations. I can cover all bases with these two setups. might be an option to consider as opposed to two baitcasting setups. Quote
Dens228 Posted July 24, 2020 Posted July 24, 2020 Only two? Then it would be two MH/Fast with a 6:xx.1 gear ratio. Quote
Super User the reel ess Posted July 24, 2020 Super User Posted July 24, 2020 My jig/worm rod is a 6-10 Bucoo SR H-F that could double as a frog rod. Then you could have a MH with a moderate enough action for trebles. To me, that covers the most basses. I use heavy braid n the jig rod and 15# mono on the trebles rod. Reel is a personal choice. I use 7.3:1 on both. But everyone doesn't fish the same as me. Most would say a MH and a M. And there are some lures that wouldn't be easy to cast on a MH baitcaster. The standard size Pop R comes to mind as well as weightless trick Worm. This is where spinning gear shines, IMO. Quote
Glaucus Posted July 24, 2020 Posted July 24, 2020 7' MH/F and M/F But really if I only had 2 rods it would be a MH/F baitcast setup and a M/F spinning setup. 1 Quote
