You willing to hold that bait in your hand, while someone does a mediocre hook set with 50 yards of line out?  I'm not.  It will all feel the same when you have a fish in the boat for a grip and grin.

Yeah its likely just a difference in feel.

Ill try that approach to setting the hook as with braid i was basically sweeping from whatever position I was in since my rod movements are only about 12 - 2 when working the rig.

You are working the weight when all you need to do is drag it, the lure is coasting along on slack line following the weight. Bass often engulf the soft plastic without you feeling anything until you pull the line tighter or the fish moves off.

The 20 lb line isn't needed, just creates more bow in the line.

I may have misspoken but yeah im basically dragging from 12-2 then reeling in slack. The reason for 20lb is simply to reduce break offs on the mainline.

Today I was able to recover the rig after a snag but not before breaking 2 beads.

Shore, off a dock that sits at about 10ft of water casting towards about 20-25ft of water.

Very difficult to work a heavy weight uphill through rocks without hanging up from shore.

My advice fishing from shore off a dock where you can't move to change angles to free the weight is go lighter.

For example finesse slip shot rig is the ultimate light weight C-rig. Using a baitcasting outfit a 3/8 oz tubular "mojo" shape weight with 12-15 lb line will hang up less often.

Another option is give up on the C-rig and try a drop shot rig. You tie a over hand knot to the end below the drop shot  weight to retain it. The line will break off at the over hand knot losing the weight but saving the hook and soft plastic. You can use 10-12 lb line with 3/8-1/2 oz weight.

Sometimes..it's all about asking the right question.
