Super User DitchPanda Posted July 19, 2020 Super User Posted July 19, 2020 I've only been fishing frogs heavy for a few years...after I discovered the beauty of a pad crasher. I've almost exclusively thrown a walking frog and was wondering when you go to a popping style? I've got a few poppers but never really gave them much of a go. Quote
Super User the reel ess Posted July 19, 2020 Super User Posted July 19, 2020 I like the regular one when the water is a tad cooler, like around the spawn and later in fall. I like the popper in between. When you throw it on the mat, you want to make some disturbance. The popper makes a little more commotion. It also walks more easily for me. At least, the Booyah brand popper walks more easily than the regular one. Also, the Booyah is extremely durable for a frog that soft. I always have the regular one to fall back on when the popper wears out. 1 Quote
Rpratt Posted July 19, 2020 Posted July 19, 2020 Maybe I am a little over simplified, but I like the poppers on open water and the regular frogs on mats. I can walk a popping frog just as well as a "standard frog" so on open water why not have a little chugging when ya need it. 2 Quote
Lead Head Posted July 19, 2020 Posted July 19, 2020 I pretty much only use the pointed frogs if I'm wanting less action or coming through emergent weeds. Popping frogs walk great (pad crashers do) and create a little more splash with the added bonus of being able to "stop and pop" whenever you want. Sometimes fish like a popping action more than a walking action and a popping frog allows me to present both without changing lures. 1 Quote
r83srock Posted July 20, 2020 Posted July 20, 2020 I’m to the point I could live with a popping pad crasher all day every day, it’s my go to. I have frogs for heavy Matt’s and ones for walking, but the booyah does that and every thing else equally well in my opinion. The hooks aren’t super huge or thick, but I’ve never bent one out either. 1 Quote
Nelson Delaney Posted July 20, 2020 Posted July 20, 2020 Get a few of each & let the bass tell you what they want. If you not catching with one, tie on the other. Quote

If it's thick stuff, the cupped, popping face catches too much stuff, so the regular frog is the better option. If it's sparse, the extra popping action seems to get me more bites and allows the bait to sit in place even more than a regular frog while walking. Quote
Black Hawk Basser Posted July 20, 2020 Posted July 20, 2020 I had never been a big fan of fishing frogs until I got a Booyah Poppin Pad Crasher. My fish-per-hour rate went way up and now I have much more confidence when throwing the Poppin PC. Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted July 20, 2020 Super User Posted July 20, 2020 I willl use a popping frog until conditions dictate I don't. Usually it is when the areas have grass or lilly pads that are sticking up too high for the frog to work effectively. Walking either style isn't an issue. Quote
