Miken216 Posted July 18, 2020 Posted July 18, 2020 So currently my top water set up is a 6’6 m/f avid with a 7.1 steez sv tw I was just curious of what you guy throw your top water with I was debating on making this my jerk bait rod and getting a avid x 6’4 m/xf for my top water and putting the steez on that and put my 6.3 tatula sv tws on the 6’6 for jerkbaits options anyone Quote
Super User soflabasser Posted July 18, 2020 Super User Posted July 18, 2020 I use spinning gear for most of my topwater fishing. A 6'0''-7'0'' medium action to heavy action rod with a size 4000 reel is my favorite combo for topwater fishing and other techniques. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted July 18, 2020 Global Moderator Posted July 18, 2020 Depends on the bait. I use a 7' MH/F Ethos Micro with a 7.3 Okuma Cerros and 20lb braid for walking baits, ploppers, and bigger poppers. For poppers and baits with a back prop only I use a 6' 6" ML Falcon/BPS Prolite with 20lb braid. Quote
Super User FryDog62 Posted July 18, 2020 Super User Posted July 18, 2020 I use a 6’8” 683c Dobyns Champ for jerkbaits until the water warms and topwater kicks in... then I use the rod for throwing Arashi Cover Pops. I do use a high speed reel (8.1:1) to pick up slack quickly either when jerking or when walking the dog. The other rod I use for straight-retrieve Topwater lures (Buzzbait, Plopper 75, Jitterbug) is a 7 foot ALX Buzz with a 7.1:1 Tatula Elite. That reel is great for throwing lighter/high profile lures a MILE! Quote
Junger Posted July 18, 2020 Posted July 18, 2020 6'9 ML/F Lew's Custom Speedstick Plus for poppers, walking baits, small wake baits. It has a 9" handle and a MBR style taper, I really enjoy this rod for poppers. It's rated a ML, but I have hauled 9lb snakeheads wrapped in hydrilla with 12lb mono with this rod, it has backbone when you need it. 7'4 H/F Daiwa Elite AGS for toads. I can chuck a keitech noisy flapper a mile with this thing, it has a soft tip but plenty of back bone. It's also super light so I can throw it all day. 7' H/F GLX 844C for frogs, teckels, etc. I fish pretty heavy cover and this still has the backbone for it. I don't use it for the sensitivity, more so for how light the rod is and how it can work a frog and not hurt my wrist. 7'2 MH/R Daiwa Zillion G2 for ploppers, spro rats, pompadours, etc. Great action on the rod for big trebles. I can't remember the last time I lost a fish on this rod. 1 Quote
waymont Posted July 18, 2020 Posted July 18, 2020 I recently help a St Croix Mojo Bass 6'8" top water rod and it felt great. I wasn't much of a fan of the first Mojo line, but this rod felt great. It would feel great with an Sv tw on it. Quote

813basstard Posted July 19, 2020 Posted July 19, 2020 Depends on how well they’re schoolin’... Being on the co-angler side a lot, I’ve thrown them on a Paw Patrol rod up to a flippin stick.. Quote
NavyVet1204 Posted July 19, 2020 Posted July 19, 2020 I have a Tatula 100 on a 6’9” MHF for my top water applications. Quote
optimator Posted July 19, 2020 Posted July 19, 2020 I use the same rod I use for crank baits. G Loomis GL2 PR844C. For frogs I use a Dobyns Fury 735C. Quote
CountryboyinDC Posted July 19, 2020 Posted July 19, 2020 What line do you use for topwater? I don't think I'd want an XF action, but it may okay for some people with monofil. Quote

But I use a 6'6 M/F Premier with 10 lb. mono for topwater plugs. Quote
Super User RoLo Posted July 19, 2020 Super User Posted July 19, 2020 "Topwater" is a large category that involves a wide selection of lures, rods, reels & line. Given a choice, I try to adhere to rod lengths nearest to 6-ft 9-in (my preferred mix of power & speed). I have casting outfits and spinning outfits devoted to topwater baits, which all use braided line (no leader) between 20 and 50 lb test, depending on the prevailing cover. Roger Quote

Yeah idk cause for my top water I’ve been throwing them on a. 6’6 avid m/f for walking poppers and ploppers but I just order the avid x 6’8 m/xf and I wanted to make one for top water and the other into my jerk bait rod Quote

Roger I only haves frog rod h/f and either 6’6 m/f or 6’8 m/xf and I throw ploppers poppers and walking baits I’m trying to figure which one will be best for these applications Quote
Super User the reel ess Posted July 19, 2020 Super User Posted July 19, 2020 I use an older 7' Falcon MH rod that was advertised as the Trap Caster back then with a Lew's Tournament MB reel spooled with 15# Berkley Big Game mono. That's the primary one. I also have another combo with a 6'6" Berkley Lightning Rod M action, same reel, same line. It's a cheaper rod with a beautiful action for topwaters with mono line. If I want to fish three topwaters or I want to fish a really light one, I'll also use my M spinning combo, Pflueger Trion reel and 7' newer Lightning Rod, spooled with 20# braid. This is not my preferred combo for topwaters, but it'll do in a pinch. Sensitivity is not critical for topwaters. But the right action is and light weight is very nice as well. 1 Quote

I think it depends on your personal preference. I know some people that fish topwater plugs on much slower rods than I do (like a moderate action) while others use faster. Many can fish topwaters better than I can. Quote
