Super User DitchPanda Posted July 17, 2020 Super User Posted July 17, 2020 What lure or piece of gear have you bought this year that has surprised you? For me it has to be my 7ft medium mod fast Berkley lightning rod. I mean it's not gonna blow your mind but for $40 I couldn't ask for much more. I love it for squarebills. 6 Quote
Black Hawk Basser Posted July 17, 2020 Posted July 17, 2020 KastKing braid. Does not seem much different to me than Sufix 832. It's waaay cheaper. Quote
Super User Mobasser Posted July 17, 2020 Super User Posted July 17, 2020 Shimano Sahara 2500fi spinning reel.Smooth, light, great drag. Quote
Hewhospeaksmuchbull Posted July 17, 2020 Posted July 17, 2020 I got to say that the medium mod fast Berkley lightning rod that I had was on target for the money. Wish I had not broken it and it was tough, snag aggravation was its down fall. My new Biolabs wake gill is fantastic for the 16 bucks I spent on it and a whole lot cheaper than the Gantrel it replaced. I made an off target cast with it and decided to burn it back in, it didn't flop over or blowout. Quote
garroyo130 Posted July 17, 2020 Posted July 17, 2020 Med mod lightning rod is great H2O Express crankbaits are budget friendly and have worked well for me ... Quote

Global Moderator Mike L Posted July 17, 2020 Global Moderator Posted July 17, 2020 I really don’t change things up much anymore. After years of experimenting and change, I for the most part just use what I’ve had success with and more importantly have confidence in. Every once in while I’ll read about something here that folks talk about that sounds good and consider changing, but when it comes down to it, there really isn’t anything I’m not satisfied with. Super User GreenPig Posted July 18, 2020 Super User Posted July 18, 2020 Picked up a Daiwa Procyon 7' Heavy casting rod. Wanted to try a shorter rod for walking and pitching frogs frogs up close. It's nice, light, and allows me to place my frogs in tight spaces. 2 Quote
garroyo130 Posted July 18, 2020 Posted July 18, 2020 Lews carbon fire rods have also been a pleasant surprise. I only have the heavy action one currently but have pondered getting the Med/mod to see if its a true med/mod as the lightning rod feels like more of a med light to me than a true medium. 2 Quote

You're probably not interested in the painful reality: “Procyon” is the brightest star in the “Lesser Dog” constellation (Canis minor). One would logically deduce that Daiwa offers an upscale rod called “Sirius”, which is the brightest star in the “Great Dog” constellation (Canis major). But NO, Daiwa named their esoteric model “Steez”. Roger 1 1 Quote

Global Moderator 12poundbass Posted July 19, 2020 Global Moderator Posted July 19, 2020 After my Kastking rod broke and they disappointed me with their warranty the wife and son went out and bought me a Lightning Rod. I love that thing! Right now it’s rigged with a 4/0 EWG and a 3/8 oz bullet weight and I flip with it every change I get. I might go buy a couple more because they’re cheap! 1 Quote

I came THAT close to posting about the Berkley Lightning rod, but dropped the ball after other members did. To be sure, the Lightning rod has been a low-priced, high-performing blank for decades, and still is. Another low-priced rod I've held in high esteem is the BPS Bionic Blade. On a low note, Bass Pro has since bumped up the price on their bionic blades (Today, it's just fairly priced). Roger 1 Quote

For me, the new Metanium has been the most pleasant surprise. I expected it to be excellent, given the price, but it has blown away my expectations. I've given thought to just getting rid of my whole arsenal and replacing them all with Metaniums. Quote

That's correct: 'steez' is the binary term for Style & Ease (StEase). Frankly, I've been disappointed by Metanium, which IMO is noticeably inferior to the Core. Sold my last Metanium on ebay, which I replaced with a Bantam (my new crush). Roger Quote
