MUSLENUTZ Posted July 15, 2020 Posted July 15, 2020 I found my sweet spot with braid on my baitcaster. I find that 30lb power pro just works the best for me on all levels of management and performance from what I’ve tried with different brands and test size. Only downfall is the green thumb. I just purchased a 2500 size reel. Ive never had any braid spooled for spinning. What brands and test size is going to give me the comparable experience that I’ve had with the above? Using for light plastics for the most part, but always around brush. Also does anyone use straight braid on spinning without a leader? 1 Quote
Born 2 fish Posted July 15, 2020 Posted July 15, 2020 I use 10lb suffix 832 on my spinning reel I usually use a leader. Quote
Super User jimmyjoe Posted July 15, 2020 Super User Posted July 15, 2020 I still have one 2500-size reel with 10 lb. Sufix 832 on it also. I don't use a leader on that one, although I did for all spinning setups with heavier braid. jj Quote
basser27 Posted July 15, 2020 Posted July 15, 2020 15lb braid is the most versatile for spinning. I use original power pro 2 Quote
greentrout Posted July 15, 2020 Posted July 15, 2020 use 20 lb. and less Magreel, Spiderwire and Berkley Fireline. No leader ... Shimano, Mitchell and Piscifun reels ... big fan of braid on spinning reels ... game changer ... good fishing ... Quote

Just put it on, lay down the tape, no slipping, no unevenness on the spool and it lasts usually a season or two. How about on spinning? I feel like backing might not be an issue with the spool. Do you use or not? Quote
optimator Posted July 15, 2020 Posted July 15, 2020 I switched to braid on my spinning rod this year. Like greentrout said, it's a game changer. I like it enough that I've added 3 spinning rods to my arsenal. I use 15 & 20 Jbraid 8. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted July 15, 2020 Global Moderator Posted July 15, 2020 10-20, just depends on the brand and diameter of the line. I like KastKing Super power in 10 and 12 pound, or Seaguar Smackdown in 15 or 20. Quote

livin2fish Posted July 15, 2020 Posted July 15, 2020 I like Fins Windtamer 15 lb braid as good as any braid I've tried for 2500 and 3000 spinning reels. Almost always have a leader tied on. My reason for the leader is, it is very difficult to break off braid if snagged and I'd rather leave a short leader in the water than a long section of braid to get tangled in someone's motor. 1 1 Quote
Super User Cgolf Posted July 15, 2020 Super User Posted July 15, 2020 I have used fireline, fused instead of braided, since it came out and hope to use it for the rest of my time. I use either 10# or 20# on my spinning reels. The only issue I have seen is the 20# can be a bit stiff initially, but it works in with use. Have tried some braids over time, but have always come back to Fireline. Quote
CountryboyinDC Posted July 15, 2020 Posted July 15, 2020 I use anywhere from 10 lb to 20 lb braid on my bass spinning outfits. Mostly yellow Power Pro, but I've also got some Tuf-Line 4orce and XP in yellow and green. I use leaders with all of them and I do put backing on them to use cheaper monofilament as opposed to braid, not for any slippage issues. I would probably start at 15 lb and see if there's any reason to change, based on what you're doing with the outfit. 1 Quote
plawren53202 Posted July 15, 2020 Posted July 15, 2020 10# or 15# Sufix 832 on my spinning reels. I would always use a leader with braid on a spinning reel. To me the "no leader" situations seem to be where visibility is not an issue, like muddy water, fishing a frog over heavy vegetation or pitching a jig into heavy cover/punching. If I'm using a spinning rod rather than a baitcaster, it's because for whatever reason I need a more "finessy" approach which would always dictate that I don't want straight braid tied to my bait, even the skinny stuff. 6# or 8# Sufix Advance copolymer is what I use for a leader. 1 Quote

I want to try some on my Senko rig. Thanks Quote

Thanks It just works so smoothly. It casts a mile, so far I have zero line twist, and no line memory. I've actually been using my spinning gear more than my baitcasting gear so far this year. 3 1 Quote

Super User RoLo Posted July 15, 2020 Super User Posted July 15, 2020 All my spinning gear is not centered on ultralight lures or finesse fishing (Far from it). I base line-test on the size of my target fish and the predominant cover I'm dealing with. Whether it's spinning gear or casting gear, the braid may run the gamut from 15 to 50 pounds. Roger Quote

Do you use or not? I like to have full spool on spinning reels and backing helps with that. Most people don't use more then the first 120ft of the line bass fishing. Once you wear that 120ft out you can flip the braid so what was the end of the lines tied to your backing is now the beginning. After you wear out both ends you can cut that section out and add a little more backing then put the braid back on and you have a full spool again. Quote

Suffix 832 and Power Pro V2 are both great. Personally I haven't used Berkley x5 or x9 but my buddies really like it. For the money there is a brand called Vicious that sells for $12 a spool and its good. You can feel the weave in it so you can cut through grass and vegetation of you need to, but it still casts very well. 8 to 15lb test is ideal IMO. I like to use thinner 10lb braids to get more casting distance. Braid doesn't break easily so some people go down to 8 others feel more comfortable with 15. Its a good idea to get it in a HI VIS color since your going to run a leader to it anyway. You can see bites with a bright braid that you may not feel. As for a leader knot the alberto is easy to tie, very small and really strong. Hope this helps. Quote
Super User FishTank Posted July 15, 2020 Super User Posted July 15, 2020 I use to use 20lb Power Pro with a 8lb or 10lb FC leader. I haven't used it in years but I just picked a spool of Sunline Xplasma. I found 6lb FC much more fun to fish and it just handles better. But with a few big fished lost on FC, I decided to go with some braid again. 1 Quote
Super User Darren. Posted July 16, 2020 Super User Posted July 16, 2020 For me, braid on spinning reels is about line management. It is so much better than straight mono/fluoro/copoly on that, IMO. 10# PowerPro yellow is what I used, but I got a sweet deal on a 1500 yard spool of PowerPro SuperSlick 8 that I've gradually switched over to it as the 10 wore out. Pretty happy with it, too. I also always tie on a leader. For me it's a value proposition as I may have to tie a new hook/rig on a setup many times during an outing. The leader allows me to not have to cut into the main line as often, thereby allowing me to keep the mainline longer. Everyone is different, leader or no leader. No right or wrong answer to the question, just a matter of preference, or "how you roll." 1 Quote
