Ogandrews Posted July 13, 2020 Posted July 13, 2020 I was looking at some of the new releases for this year and I saw that missile baits was putting out a new “ned” head called the nedball. It is literally a ball head jig with a different looking hook on it. It’s honestly pretty funny how a company can release a ball head jig, put the word ned on it, and call it innovative. I love missile baits and use a bunch of their stuff, but this really gave me a good laugh. I can guarantee that they will sell a bunch of them too with how much hype there still is around the ned. 1 Quote
moguy1973 Posted July 13, 2020 Posted July 13, 2020 I'll tell you right now that head is WAY WAY WAY too heavy for what presentations the Ned Rig was originally fished. 2 Quote
JediAmoeba Posted July 13, 2020 Posted July 13, 2020 That's what is funny about this whole ned craze...its not new. The newest most innovative thing about it is the Elaztech worms used. I was fishing ballhead jigs with curly tailed grubs 20 years ago in the spring. And I surely knew it wasn't innovative. 1 Quote
galyonj Posted July 13, 2020 Posted July 13, 2020 Apparently you can get this in 1/16, which isn't too bad. I guess the skipjack bend hook is kind of neat, but 1/0 is a little much. Quote

The last thing I need is a bigger hook to get hung up with. 1 1 Quote
Hower08 Posted July 14, 2020 Posted July 14, 2020 They know bass guys will buy anything that they think will help them. Good thing I've got pounds of light walleye jigheads that work PERFECT for "Ned" rigs. Thin wire hooks that will bend out when snagged. And the best part is you can buy 10 for the price of a 4 pack of Ned heads 2 Quote

That's been the Smallmouth bait of choice here in the Umpqua river for as long as I can remember. Quote

Ned talks a lot about how they've been doing this stuff since the 1960's and he got the idea from Chuck Wood's beetle. The 3X and then ElazTech plastics are really the only innovative thing in the whole Ned craze. 10 hours ago, browne762 said: I was just watching the 2021 releases for Strike King this past weekend on YouTube. Talking about a bigger hook, a stronger hook to handing big fish, and the most laughable for me, their Ned baits have the action that other Ned baits are lacking. If people are bending Ned hooks, either their hooks suck or their gear is too heavy. I pour mine on Eagle Claw BP500 #2 hooks and have landed flathead catfish over 20lbs with them with no problems. Their baits probably do have more action, but a Ned rig isn't supposed to be a high action bait. Kind of like using fluorocarbon line to fish an A-rig if you ask me. 2 Quote

And the best part is you can buy 10 for the price of a 4 pack of Ned heads I realized this morning whilst on the water that I'm slap out of the z-man finesse heads, but I still wanted to fish a little TRD. I found an aspirin-head jig with a what I reckon was a size 6 aberdeen-style hook on it, so I tied it on and fished it. Didn't catch anything, but I wasn't catching on anything else I threw either, and that little aspirin-head had a really wild spiral as it dropped in the water. The best part is that I didn't get snagged badly enough to have to break it off. Anyway, I think I'm done buying expensive jig heads for this presentation. I still want to slow the fall I saw, but I do love the smaller hooks that are actually in the spirit of the presentation as Mr. Kedhe describes it. 1 Quote
Ogandrews Posted July 15, 2020 Author Posted July 15, 2020 Somewhat on topic here, I just looked at what zman released and I’m really excited about the new chatterbaits their releasing, especially the willow one. I’ve been looking for a finesse chatterbait for a long time and hopefully this is what I’m looking for. Quote

This should not be surprising as there are hundreds of ned rig threads on this site alone. People can’t get enough of it. My friends have pretty much quit throwing everything except neds. Works out great for me since my baits are different than what everyone else throws haha Quote
