Super User DitchPanda Posted July 13, 2020 Super User Posted July 13, 2020 I know how good lipless are in spring and fall in cool water temps...but who out there keeps on throwing the right thru summer? I've had mixed results myself but have found the most success either with a burn and kill retrieve or stroking it off the bottom pretty aggresively. I've also had better luck this time of year using a smaller bait ..my favorite being a spro aruku shad jr. 1 Quote
zell_pop1 Posted July 13, 2020 Posted July 13, 2020 I throw em all year, they work all year...and yes try a smaller one or a silent one. 1 Quote
Super User scaleface Posted July 13, 2020 Super User Posted July 13, 2020 I like to yoyo them in deep water if its a pretty clean bottom . If there is wood there , they will find it . 1 Quote
OG Crankster Posted July 13, 2020 Posted July 13, 2020 Yesterday afternoon, I took a friend to a local cooling lake. We made a friendly bet on who can catch the most fish. Where we were fishing, the water temps were between 94-96 degrees and we fished for 5 hours.. I won the bet, 25-22. Every fish was caught on a 06 Chrome Rippin Rap. The main forage there is shad. Biggest fish was maybe 3 pounds, mostly dinks, but they wouldnt leave that lipless alone. This was using a cast and reel retrieve. 1 Quote
Super User Spankey Posted July 13, 2020 Super User Posted July 13, 2020 I love fishing a Rat-L-Trap. I do not use them exclusively. But in the heat of the summer and it’s a tough day, more than once over the years a Trap has kept me from getting skunked. Great bait. Often times in summer I’ll start out throwing some topwater pop r’s than go right to a Trap before fishing anything else. Quote
Dens228 Posted July 13, 2020 Posted July 13, 2020 For some reason I haven't caught any bass on a lipless in at least a month. I keep trying. But to be fair I haven't caught many on any type of crank. Jigs have been the ticket though. Quote
plawren53202 Posted July 13, 2020 Posted July 13, 2020 I was just thinking about this the other day (although for whatever reason I have always thrown lipless cbs in fall/winter/spring). Thinking through ledge fishing with deep divers like SK 5XDs and 6XDs. After his big win on Chick Jason Wheeler was talking about how as the summer goes on, bass out on ledges have seen a number of crankbaits and get a little more hesitant toward them, thus his success using the silent DTs from Rapala. I know most lipless cbs like Red Eye Shads aren't silent, but they are definitely smaller than, and have a less pronounced wobble than, the kinds of deep divers like 5XDs and 6XDs that people usually throw out on the ledges--and therefore, seem like they also might fit into Wheeler's theory. Plus, I wouldn't mind throwing a cb that would sink straight down where my cast lands rather than having to get a deep diving lipped cb down to the proper depth over a length of water. Quote

Luke Barnes Posted July 13, 2020 Posted July 13, 2020 I like them if there are schooling baitfish I can see, then I throw it all around and through the school. Works great on sandbass too. Quote
Black Hawk Basser Posted July 13, 2020 Posted July 13, 2020 I'd give it a go, but there is absolutely no where that I fish that allows for a sinking bait with treble hooks in the summer. Quote
papajoe222 Posted July 13, 2020 Posted July 13, 2020 You can add blade baits to give you a silent, tight wobble rather than a silent lipless. Like a RES, they have plenty of action on the fall, too. Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted July 13, 2020 Super User Posted July 13, 2020 This time of year I like to circle the clumps of weeds on the surface and bring a super spot right past them from every angle. I just reel fast enough so the trebles don't pick anything up. Quote
Born 2 fish Posted July 14, 2020 Posted July 14, 2020 Take the back treble off and only use the front hook. It will come through the weeds much better. 1 Quote
Super User RoLo Posted July 14, 2020 Super User Posted July 14, 2020 Frankly, I haven't spent enough time throwing lipless plugs in summer to offer a meaningful opinion. But if a tight wobble is attractive during a low metabolism, it's not far-fetched to believe it would appeal to fish in a negative disposition, during any season of the year. Roger Quote
