Junk Fisherman Posted July 12, 2020 Posted July 12, 2020 3 hours ago, Fishes in trees said: To echo a previous post, the best way to acquire the most rigs and deplete your wallet the quickest is to go the "dedicated rig" route. The premise behind this is that for any bait, or bait presentation, there is a " best" rig to use. And how do you KNOW which is the best if you haven't tried several different combos with the same bait? It is a dilemma, to be sure. This is a very good point. Multiple times I have bought a rod for one purpose and then ended up using that rod for something else. For example, I thought my 7'9" ML Dobyns Champion rod would be great for throwing tubes for smallies in open water. It might be but it is perfect for throwing 3"-4" swimbaits which is one of my confidence techniques so that rod is my dedicated finesse swimbait rig. I thought my 7'4" ML Dobyns Champion rod would be that tube rod but it is lighter than I thought and it is ideal for Ned rigs or light dropshot. So I ended up using my 7' ML Champion for lighter tubes and I bought a 7'6" medium action Dobyns Champion for 1/2-3/4 oz tubes. It wasn't until multiple outings using different rods for different applications that I found out what I like best. Quote
mrpao Posted July 12, 2020 Posted July 12, 2020 I am a multiple species angler so I have many different combos. I probably bass fish 80 to 90% of time. Sometimes I chase bass with regular bass tackle, sometimes I take all spinning tackle out. Sometimes I chase bass with ultralight tackle just for something fun. As for my other fishing. I do crappie and panfish, catfish and striper, trout and saltwater- surf to deepsea. If it can be caught, I'll fish for it a some point. Therefore, I have many combos for my different fishing techniques. Last time I counted I was at 85 plus combos. I have anything from $20 daiwa spinning reels to shimano Conquest. From $30 ultralight rods to gloomis Conquest rods. Too me, the gear is half the fun. I like trying out new stuff. My wife told me once, my fishing shed looked like a tackle shop. 1 Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted July 12, 2020 Super User Posted July 12, 2020 This time of year I carry 2 baitcasters and 2 spinning. Baitcasters are for jigs and weighted t-rigs. Spinning are used for finesse plastics and light crankbaits. In the fall I will start carrying 5 or 6 depending on where I am fishing. 1 Quote

Super User new2BC4bass Posted July 12, 2020 Super User Posted July 12, 2020 Well................if I had a boat like A-Jay's and rod storage like his, mine would look just like his. And like A-Jay (probably) I could fill both compartments again without using any of the rods currently stored in them. Extremely hard to pick favorites. I will say that if I plan on throwing crankbaits my Aetos 6'6" MLM/PXL Type R is an absolute pleasure to use. Diablo Spec R, Deputy and Rainshadow RX7 custom are favorite MHF rods. Love my Smallmouth 6'10" MF/Curado 51E, but I am sure others will join that rod once I get to use them enough. I really like my Regular action OG Tatulas: ML, M and MH. 1 Quote

Super User FryDog62 Posted July 13, 2020 Super User Posted July 13, 2020 The rod locker on my Lund PVB holds 15 rods... So I keep it at 15 set ups - If I need more than that I’m probably overthinking things.. 1 Quote
greentrout Posted July 13, 2020 Posted July 13, 2020 When I did some bank fishing in Texas on State Waters with regulations only 2 rods were allowed, I carried 1 spinning 6'6" med. fast and 1 med. heavy casting 6'6" or 7' fast with the spinning 8 pound test and the casting 12 lb. test. I liked it ... never felt disadvantaged in the least and the bass won its share of the contests ... good fishing ... 1 Quote
Chonch12 Posted July 13, 2020 Posted July 13, 2020 3 set ups and usually only take 2 with me now - 7' 2" MH Expride with Curado DC - 6' 6" M St. Croix Triumph with Pflueger President XT 35 - 6' 6" L Pflueger President Combo (dont take this with me anymore. Use the Triumph for weightless) Nice and simple but versatile for walking the banks. 1 Quote
Basseditor Posted July 13, 2020 Posted July 13, 2020 53 Kistler Rods and 60 Daiwa reels (and counting) I’m selling some Daiwa Tatula 100 - 8.1 brand new with SS/ceramic bearings installed. 2 Quote
Super User GreenPig Posted July 13, 2020 Super User Posted July 13, 2020 Somewhere between 50 - 60 combos. Fish too many different bodies of water to have go to rigs(ponds, rivers, swamps, clear, muddy, etc). 1 Quote
Mbirdsley Posted July 13, 2020 Posted July 13, 2020 Just for bass 6 casting and 2 spinning set ups. one extra accurist pta bait casting reel at the moment. I’d like to replace the skeet Reese crank rod with a better crank rod. The rod is way too soft and whippy for my taste. I’d like a faster action so I can get back to using mono for cranks id like to pick up another M spinning rod this winter. I have a m/l spinning rod and a MH spinning rod. Maybe spend about $300 +-on it. Other than that I’m set for the moment on bass stuff. 2 of my combos are cheaper maxx reels but, they work for trolling I have 4. 2 Okuma magda pros size 25’s. 2 spinning rods I bought on accident but, I think will be good for drifting or bottom bouncing. With a new boat I’ll be buying more trolling stuff luckily trolling rods and reels are fairly cheap trout fishing 2 set ups. st croix premier 7ft ul and phluegar president 5’6 combo. I’m Set here for a long time. I only do it a couple times a year sucker/cat fishing fishing. 2 junkie older combos I use with worms on the bottom . One is a older zebco. Set here 1 Quote

Super User Cgolf Posted July 13, 2020 Super User Posted July 13, 2020 On a recent week long trip I had 14 bass combos, 5 spinning 9 Baitcasting. For my next trip I have cut it back to 4 spinning and 6 baitcasters. My numbers are lower because I truly can only carry 6 combos max in the boat when fishing with a second person. I could do all ten when alone setting some in the back of the boat. Not a complaint, but the reality of fishing out of a 16 foot aluminum boat. I do think sometimes though that less rods and baits can be an advantage, as I don't have too many options that I overthink it. Until I get a bigger boat I won't have 3 of the same combo with different line sizes to alter the running depth of a lure. 1 Quote
Super User Columbia Craw Posted July 13, 2020 Super User Posted July 13, 2020 More than I need. 1 Quote
papajoe222 Posted July 13, 2020 Posted July 13, 2020 I own 16 casting combos and 4 spinning combos along with another dozen or so rods. I rarely take more than five in the boat. Only when i feel that l may need to finesse a few bites to save the day will l add a spinning set-up. 1 Quote

I carry 5 in my bass boat. 2 in the kayak is perfect for me too. 16 hours ago, basseditor said: 53 Kistler Rods and 60 Daiwa reels (and counting) I’m selling some Daiwa Tatula 100 - 8.1 brand new with SS/ceramic bearings installed. Super User N Florida Mike Posted July 14, 2020 Super User Posted July 14, 2020 Im down to 5 for bass. 2 casting, 3 spinning. I have more old rods and reels that I could use if the others were gone but I dont count them. I have several saltwater setups, and 10 or so catfish and bream combos . Out of the 5 bass combos , one casting combo is a dedicated spinnerbait combo. The other casting setup I use for froggin’ and for big baits, like magnum flukes. I have a finesse setup on my lightest spinning combo, which I use for creature baits and other small plastics. Another spinning combo I use mostly for worms, and the other mostly flukes. Other plastics I share with the last 2. I really need to visit academy and get a new combo. Its been years ... 1 Quote
Super User ATA Posted July 14, 2020 Author Super User Posted July 14, 2020 For me I think 8 is so much and I am going to sell some of my combos, because I didn't use them in last 6 months. I don't want to keep them around, better to be in use by someone need them. Quote

I was speaking about fishing in Harris County, Texas from the bank and not a state park. The county has fairly good sized detention/retention water sheds (one as big as 60 acres) that usually have walking trails and dog parks. A big posted sign in the parks where I fished detailed the regulations and would say "2 poles only". good fishing ... 1 Quote
