Mbirdsley Posted July 10, 2020 Posted July 10, 2020 Well I bought it on line Saturday and it arrived today in the mail. Paid $150 shipped. So far this is the nicest reel I have. 2nd would be my Carbon light 2.0. Excited to use it. I’m going to put it on my st.croix 7ft4 H bassx rod for heaving pitching, flipping, and punching. Very impressed with this reel. Knocks the socks off of my quantum accurist pt that it is replacing. Huge difference in reels once you get over that 120 dollar mark. I’m sure there is bigger difference once you hit the $200-$250 mark 1 Quote
Super User Tywithay Posted July 10, 2020 Super User Posted July 10, 2020 I think those reels were the most refined Tatula version. The new Elites are awesome, but that generation SV looked good and performed excellent. I'm sure you'll be happy with it for years to come. Quote
Dens228 Posted July 10, 2020 Posted July 10, 2020 I love that reel. That and the Elite's will soon make up my entire lineup. Quote
Mbirdsley Posted July 10, 2020 Author Posted July 10, 2020 Messing around with It in the yard I can pitch and flip a mile with it. I’m impressed so far Quote

Why is the Monkey never satisfied? Now looking at an Elite. 1 Quote

What didn't you like about that compared to the Tatula CTs? I didn't find it as comfortable to palm. The sideplate bows out too far on the Alphas reels and just fits my hand awkwardly. Quote
Super User Tywithay Posted July 11, 2020 Super User Posted July 11, 2020 12 minutes ago, BaitFinesse said: I see. I love the way them palm. How was the casting? I think if you hold your hand more forward on the reel, it's more narrow than the CT. I must hold it further back than some folks because that bulge was awful, but I've liked all the Tatula frames. Casting on the Alphas CT was finicky, but excellent. It did not like a full spool of fluorocarbon at all. Once I cut it down to a half spool, or the first line on the SV spools, it was really good. Lowest I used was a 1/16 plus plastic, but I could flip it out there a ways with little effort. Quote

I love the 100 Elite reels and they perform great. The 2020 SV just didn't feel as refined. Paintjob looked cheaper. It felt like it was overbraked. Retrieve wasn't as smooth either. If I wanted another for lighter baits, I'd probably get the regular Tatula 100 and get a shallow spool from AliExpress. I think the Tat CT frame palms great (but I have big hands). I’d enjoy my CT a lot of it didn’t feel like it was full of gravel during retrieve. luckily the seller offered a return. Tempting to try one of these SVs in its place. Quote
Super User Tywithay Posted July 11, 2020 Super User Posted July 11, 2020 29 minutes ago, BaitFinesse said: This is news to me. Finicky in what way? Did it cast choked off and you had to run really low mag dial making it finicky mid cast? To me the Alphas has a way better shape. Wide where I want it to fill up my palm and narrow in the front to wrap my finger around the nose. The Tatula CT is just all sorts of wrong shaped to accommodate the TWS. Wide up front and narrow in the back makes it seem like it is shaped backwards compared to the older Dawia platforms. Alphas also has a cutout for the thumb to access the mag dial so the edge of the dial can be smooth to the touch and the dial can be deeply recessed. The wideness of the CT does not accommodate this so there is no cutout for access and the very edge of the dial protrudes all around from the side plate and is roughly textured to make it adjustable so you're constantly feeling it when palming. This is with 3 fingers in front of the trigger palming mind you. When the spool was completely full, it was almost like there were no brakes at times. Then I'd crank it up and it'd cast 15 feet then the brakes would choke it off. I had to remove line to get the weight down to find a sweet spot. 1 Quote
Mbirdsley Posted July 11, 2020 Author Posted July 11, 2020 I don’t think this is a current production model which, is fine it was still new in box. How old do you think the reel is? Or what generation is it Quote

It’s a Tatula 100 with a SV spool (for the most part). That’s why we were discussing the differences earlier. But I don’t know that the CT style (the model you have) is no longer in production? Could have been phased out I guess, but they are still readily available. Quote

Just get a Zillion SV TW (avoid the 9 speed), a used TD Zillion or Alphas CT 70 SV. The Zillion SV is, for all intents and purposes, the Tat SV TW with the free float spool (supported pinion), no? Mechanically speaking, are there other major differences? Quote
AmmoGuy Posted July 11, 2020 Posted July 11, 2020 23 minutes ago, BaitFinesse said: Different gears. Zaion handle side plate. Much better spool. 34mm spool size so an endless parade of spool options. Stock one is really good though. The TD Zillion is great too. It has a reputation of being a butter smooth tank of a reel that stays silent and smooth even after years of heavy use. They are a 36mm spool and spool options are limited. You can drop $70 for spacers to make it a 34mm spool reel and then go spend another $70 for a Zillion TW SV spool. Palms better than the newer Daiwa but weight 8 oz. There is a 7.55 oz version with a great spool that is very SV like. The Megabass IP reels and Daiwa J dream. I LOVE the IP68 I have. Absolute butter and deathly silent after years of locked drag frog duty. I got mine used like new for $300. The Coastals have different gears, a different drive shaft, better spool, etc.. than a Tat 100, and an aluminum side plate, and one of mine is still noisy. I say that to say, that the supported pinion is honestly the only thing that REALLY interests me about a Zillion SV. Quote

Coastals are Tatulas. Eh, the drive shaft, drive gear, drag washers, drag collar, etc. are all a different design in the Coastal (when compared to the 100). There are more differences in the lower end drive assembly of a Coastal and a 100 than there are between a Zillion and a CT. Mechanically speaking, the lower portion of the drive is the exact same design in a Tat CT and a Zillion. Obviously, the big difference is the free floated spool (and accompanying supported pinion). I’d wager that accounts for 99% of any added smoothness in a Zillion. The inductor spring in the Coastal is pretty soft, yes. That being said I can cast a 5” weightless Senko as far as I’d want to. Honestly, the Coastal is no more of a Tat 100 than the Zillion is a Tat SV. They share chassis, but both have mechanical differences. (Albeit the free float spool is a big one) Quote

No. 12 minutes ago, BaitFinesse said: The Zillion TW SV and Zillion TWS (and vairants) both are based on Tatula platforms but have substantial nechanical differences to set them apart from the low end Tatulas. They really don’t though. The chassis , the lower end of the drive assembly, the drag system, the TWS, it’s all exactly the same. Quite literally the only “substantial” mechanical difference is the supported pinion (and accompanying free float spool). Quote
