ajschn06 Posted July 9, 2020 Posted July 9, 2020 Big swim jig fan but I like a thick durable skirt and have noticed a lot of them to be lacking in that area. What are your favorite skirts? Quote
Super User WRB Posted July 9, 2020 Super User Posted July 9, 2020 Barlows Tackle and Fishing Skirts both sell what you need. You can contact Siebert Outdoors and have jigs made to your specs. Tom Quote
Super User the reel ess Posted July 9, 2020 Super User Posted July 9, 2020 Check out @cadman website. http://cadmansjigs.weebly.com/ Great guy and a member on here. He made me some custom wire tied jigs. He'll make anything you want or send you parts. I also ordered some plain jigheads. As for production skirts I like War Eagle's. But I have heard their inventory is low. Quote
Super User DitchPanda Posted July 9, 2020 Super User Posted July 9, 2020 This is my 2nd year of making my own skirts. I get my tabs and bands from skirts unlimited..got the tool there to for just 3 or 4 bucks. For more permanent skirts i.e jigs I don't lose often such as swim jigs I tie my skirt on with braid. For me I like the process of making them and like customizing colors so I wouldn't go back to buying them premade. That said I used to buy boss skirts on tackle warehouse and siebert outdoors skirts all the time..both are good. 1 Quote

I'm going to have to look into this..... quick question- it appears that each color is sold as "10 skirt tabs per pack" for about $2.50. What does that mean exactly? How many skirt tabs go into each skirt? 7 minutes ago, BassNJake said: Short ones? ? Haha I wondered how long that would take... Quote

Each tab has 22 strands...most jigs I use 2 tabs for a total of 44 strands...but I prefer a thinner skirt. If you want heavier go with 3 tabs for 66 strands ...the would be a nice full bulky skirt. Swim jigs I actually prefer a very thin skirt myself..I go 1.5 to 2 tabs max and I trim off the inside strands. Quote
Super User WRB Posted July 9, 2020 Super User Posted July 9, 2020 I mentioned Fishing Skirts.... It's easy the cut silicone skirt tabs lengths in half or fourth or take just few strands to mix colors. More strands adds bulk and don't know why anyone needs more bulk using swim jigs? Tom Quote
Super User Munkin Posted July 10, 2020 Super User Posted July 10, 2020 Skirt strand count is different person to person. For me since swim jigs are a clear water bait I use 2 or 2.5 tabs. This allows the strands to move freely and not just look like a blob coming through the water. Allen Quote

Tom I agree with this 100%. I don't want bulk in a swim jig so I use 33 to 44 strands max and cut the inside strands off aka northern swim jig style. To me the skirt is there just for a little bit of shape or profile...the magic of a swim jig is the trailer imo. That's what the fish key on so I dont want it lost in a bulky mess of strands. Quote
Lobocito Posted July 10, 2020 Posted July 10, 2020 I bought a bunch of pre-made skirts from tacklewarehouse a few months ago and was overall disappointed in most of them. Bought from mostly dirty jigs and zman. They looked good at first but comparing the quality of those pre-tied skirts to some jigs I've bought since is a big difference. Siebert Outdoors skirts are super high quality, just bought like 8 jigs from Mike and am super satisfied. He'll put together any skirt combo you want but he also has so many advertised already its tough to find a skirt idea he doesn't have a name for. I also LOVE my Sixth Sense jigs. I think the skirt quality on those guys is phenomenal. Quote

I had been using Nutechs- I bought a stash a couple of years ago and they held up well and caught a lot of fish- but lacked pizzaz and patterns. I grabbed a couple of V&M Pacemakers and was a little disappointed. They looked good but the one skirt strands were coming off and whatnot after like 20 minutes of fishing and no fish. I caught fish after fish on the ***'s and never lost a single strand I feel like! Quote
Heron Posted July 10, 2020 Posted July 10, 2020 Personally I’ve since come away from swim jigs. While I thoroughly enjoyed using them and making them, it became more of a satisfying art project, rather than a tool for effective fish catching. I came to notice a few things that has changed my mind about them. 1.) it seemed the bait was no more effective with the skirt, than it was as a plain paddle tail without the skirt. 2.) the bait seemed no more effective with a beautiful, well crafted skirt pattern, than it was with a plain single color like white. 3.) but mostly, I no longer like the way the skirt disrupts the flow of water over the tail of the trailer, impeding the action. But, that being said, I always liked... - Dirty Jigs skirt patterns. - Bass dozer skirts (but I think his stuff had been discontinued) Quote
