papajoe222 Posted July 9, 2020 Posted July 9, 2020 I’ve been using a 5/0 ofset worm hook for big worms, running it down an inch or so from the nose. my question is; What size/style hook do you guys use and do you hook them per usual, or further down the wom (how far down)? Quote
Global Moderator Mike L Posted July 9, 2020 Global Moderator Posted July 9, 2020 For those I use either a 4/0 or 5/0 snelled Trokar ewg. I rig all plastics the same, where the nose just covers the eyelet Mike Quote
Super User WRB Posted July 9, 2020 Super User Posted July 9, 2020 If you are using a sliding bullet weight don't run the hook eye into the worm nose any further then covering the hook eye. The reason is the weight pushes on the soft plastic damaging the worm nose end. Big is relative to soft plastic diameter where the hook is located not length. If the hook gap is 2X the plastic diameter it the right size. Worm hook style is a personal choice, I prefer straight shank hooks for example believing high % of successful hook sets. Tom 1 Quote

My reasoning for positioning the hook farther down on long worms is a belief that l have a better chance of a solid hook up, even though bass will normally strike at the head of their prey. Quote
Super User WRB Posted July 9, 2020 Super User Posted July 9, 2020 Even with the weight pegged the worm nose area bends inside the basses mouth preventing the hook point from moving. Use longer straight or off set worm hooks, aviod EWG shorter hooks. The wide wire bend EWG hooks acts like a cam rolling the hook flat inside the basses mouth missing tissue on the way out.
