Chonch12 Posted July 8, 2020 Posted July 8, 2020 Say you lose a lure or 2 in a stubborn log in the water. I wonder how long it will still be in that log after you break your line off. Last night I was fishing and lost 2 chatter baits in the same small brush pile that had a few smaller logs/ big branches. I had the wood moving but it broke off it was only about 5-6 foot from shore. Problem was it was really late, I didn't have a flashlight and had to head out. Normally I would just walk out and see what I could do to retrieve it depending on the lure. I planned on going back today with some rope to haul out the branches and try and get my lures back. Think there is a chance it is still lodged in there, or do they typically fall out soon after? I also have a magnet coming tomorrow to toss around the same area hoping to also get a few of them back I lost. I wouldn't typically care too much but it was a brand new lure that is very difficult to find, so I want it back. Thanks Quote
Super User RoLo Posted July 8, 2020 Super User Posted July 8, 2020 I'm sure those lures are happy in their new home, and not planning on moving. Do you own a snorkel? Roger 1 Quote

Roger haha like I said usually its whatever I know and expect to lose lures. But this was only about 5-6 feet from the bank. little pile of think branches and small logs. I pulled a few out but didnt have the right equipment to get the rest. Hoping for the best today. Figured if i waited too long they would pretty much be ruined anyway 1 Quote
BassNJake Posted July 8, 2020 Posted July 8, 2020 I snagged a very good crankbait on a standing tree. Using my trusty lure retriever for about 10 minutes, it also got hung up in this brush pile. I tied the rope off and a week later, I used a second lure retriever to get the first one and my crankbait A log bouncing around in the open waves might not hold as tight. I found a chatterbait and it was all rusted at the hook eye. I was able to sand and file the rust off and its been working well, maybe even better as now the gap at the eye hole is a little bigger I'm positive at some point this lure will break at this eye but I'm gonna ride it out until it does (2+ years now) Quote
Super User Teal Posted July 8, 2020 Super User Posted July 8, 2020 I have hooked several limbs and found q lipless or a squarebill on them. I keep them and change out the hooks Quote
Deeare Posted July 9, 2020 Posted July 9, 2020 It Should be in the log for a while.... if not it’s on the bottom. Throw on some goggles and get er done. Hope the visibility is decent. 1 Quote
Lobocito Posted July 9, 2020 Posted July 9, 2020 Last Summer I bought my first ever jackhammer. Took it to the creek, caught a fish on my very first cast. Second cast I flung it into a tree 25 feet in the air. (I had barely done any creek fishing and was terrible at controlling my casts...) I let that sucker sit up there for 3 months until it was late November and the leaves had fallen off and the branches were a bit more brittle, took my flippin stick and a 1 oz jig out there and pulled the whole d**n branch off! Moral of the story is that it is very likely to still be there. If you couldn't wiggle it free you probably stuck it hard enough that it isn't going anywhere on its own any time soon. 1 Quote
WVU-SCPA Posted July 9, 2020 Posted July 9, 2020 Couldn't get a chatterbait off a submerged log and ended up snapping. Snagged that same bait 2 weeks latter with another chatterbait. As long as no one beats you to it, its still there and will be usable. 1 Quote

Really shocked. thinking maybe they fell off while I got them out. Going back tonight with my fishing magnet, get it in the mail today. Hope maybe I can find at least one in the area where I lost quite a few the other day and this summer. Never used a fishing magnet before. The plus is those are now out of the way to get caught on, and definitely wont mess with the bass in the area either. Seems like a win win overall for 1.5 hours of work 2 1 Quote

I've never used one either, but I've used a big magnet made for a CB antenna, and I learned two things: it ain't easy to get the magnet to go where you want it to go, but it is easy to get snagged on stuff like rocks and branches. You might lose the magnet if you're not careful. Hard to use from the bank. Also, people sometimes drown using those magnets. Be careful. I'd like to see the magnet if you have a link or picture. Appreciate the advice. IM only looking to use it from the bank in water that is at most 6 feet deep. Also mainly want to use it around 6-10ft from he bank in water around 3-4ft deep. That is where the majority of lures get caught up and lost. Not going to go crazy haha 1 Quote
Dirtyeggroll Posted July 10, 2020 Posted July 10, 2020 I found lures when a lake was drained that I lost 3 years prior. Quote

It depends on the type of lake, and the location within the lake. The point(s) where water feeds into the lake is the worst. Silt can quickly bury a lure, sometimes within days, like after a storm. Even after draining, they can be buried so deep they are never found. On the other hand, I have found lures that appear to have been lost over 10 years. Quote
