Super User DitchPanda Posted July 7, 2020 Super User Posted July 7, 2020 I've always considered myself someone who has pretty broad tastes in music...I like at least something from most genres. My favorite is rock and it's seemingly endless sub genres. Now my girlfriend likes a lot of stuff but is more straight forward in her tastes...never really moving towards any extremes. So I like to challenge her from time to time and put on something many would consider weird...or at the very least not mainstream. So yesterday we are cleaning the basement and I throw in Captain Beefheart Safe as milk...instantly she is like What the F is this? To me challenging music is like learning to enjoy complex things...like a super smoky scotch...maybe it's abrasive on first encounter but with repeated tries the sharp corners dull down and you can dig deeper and find some real substance. Great albums to me aren't always great first listen..but with every repeat try you find more and more in there to latch onto eventually loving it. Sorry this was longwinded...anyway what are some of the stranger or more avant garde musicians/ albums you guys love? Btw I introduced my girlfriend to Rush and she loves them...and while maybe not out there like a lot of bands they are more challenging and complex than anything in the radio so I consider that a victory! Heartland Posted July 7, 2020 Posted July 7, 2020 Jethro Tull I think I will add Talking Heads to the list, they were a great band with a lot to say and that incredible unique style of David Byrne they were unique and different. Modern Day, I would add System of a Down to this list, different and refreshing is what I would use to describe S.O.D. 2 Quote

Talking heads are one of my top 5 favorite bands ever. Stop making sense is one of the best live albums ever recorded imo. 13 minutes ago, MN Fisher said: Ian Anderson rocks the flute...I don't consider Tull 'weird' at all. Echo and the Bunnymen however... Echo and the bunnymen? That's so weird you mentioned them...I watched the lips like sugar video like 20 minutes ago. Echo are very unique but in that particular song they kinda have an 80s era Bowie vibe. 20 minutes ago, Heartland said: Jethro Tull I think I will add Talking Heads to the list, they were a great band with a lot to say and that incredible unique style of David Byrne they were unique and different. Tull is also great they have some well known jams like aqualung and locomotive breath..but also some lesser known greats like bungle in the jungle and song for jeffrey. Quote

Super User jimmyjoe Posted July 7, 2020 Super User Posted July 7, 2020 Funny you should mention Captain Beefheart. That leads right into Zappa. Television She might like Steppenwolf if she's into oldies. HENDRIX!!!! If she's into blues, turn her on to Beth Hart. That woman has lungs that just won't quit! If she likes instrumental, try Tetuzi Akiyama. If she shows interest in Industrial ..... well, you'll have to wing it yourself. ??? jj Quote
Super User fishwizzard Posted July 7, 2020 Super User Posted July 7, 2020 I think this might be the most well known "weird music": Which leads to the general noise music genre. I am not a fan, but I have given it a try. I bought this album via mail order back in the late 90's, the "case" was a folded piece of sheet metal with the corners riveted shut. I still listen to a bit of ambient/drone stuff, but have mostly moved on. This was an other 90's mail order blind buy, but it's actually good and I still give it a listen every so often: Quote

Super User .ghoti. Posted July 7, 2020 Super User Posted July 7, 2020 Gentle Giant. Who’s heard of them? British band, early 70’s. also Premiata Forneria Marconi, which translates as Marconi’s Best Bakery, if memory serves. Italian, same era. King Crimson Quote

I probably should give them more of a chance to be honest. Quote

I agree that Tool is very different..I would hesitate to call them weird but they have been a favorite of mine since junior high (25 years ago) so maybe I'm used to them and that's why they don't sound weird. My dad's favorite band is The Doors...they are kinda weird...but there again I grew up with it so it just sounds normal to me Quote

It’s “weird” that they can make music without electronics....... Quote
