So last year I got some 1/4 ounce war eagle spinnerbaits when Lurenet had a good sale going on. Not knowing what they were I only bought 4 each of 2 different blade combos. Flash forward to this year when I had to rely heavily on spinnerbaits to catch fish I found that a 1/4 ounce war eagle seemed to out produce a 3/16 SK bleeding bait spinnerbait that has done really well for me in the past by what seemed to be a noticeable margin.

What I liked about the War Eagle was the number of bites, what I didn't like was having to rebend them after every fish. I ended up losing the 2 I took with and switched to only the strike king spin. The strike king didn't need to be rebent after every fish, but it definitely had the wire bent by the head at the end of the week and the hook gap was opened a bit. With the price of spinnerbaits is it worth it to keep buying the War Eagles at full price? Since I wasn't reeling them side by side at the same time, it is hard to truly say one was better than the other. My boat mate had a war eagle tied on one trip and he bested me 3 fish to 1, but our retrieves could have been totally different. I am just struggling with the thought of paying over 7 bucks for a spinnerbait. If TW does a black friday sale that would help.

Also do you all net spinnerbait fish to limit bending of the bait?

Part 2

So I really like 1/4 and 3/16 ounce spinnerbaits for bass. They seem to do better for me than the heavier options. Why is it so difficult to find spinnerbaits in these weights, especially the better brands? I don't want the walmart 1$ baits, I want something to last a while.

Outlet bait has a 4 piece  1/4 oz. War eagle assorment package for $16 and change. Also right now orders over 9.99 ship free.

Another option would be buying components and assembling them yourself from Barlow's, Jann's, Lurepartsonline etc.  Minimal investment and you can tweak any way you like.

The question is the wire different on the War Eagles, super thin or something else, that gives them more vibration than other spins? The war eagle and SK baits were similar physical sizes, just a 16th ounce different in weight. I have read in the past that War eagle used thin wire and this is one reason so many used them, not sure if this is true. I could measure the wire and see if I could order blanks with that size wire.

I use to use War Eagle Mike McClelland finesse spinnerbaits. They caught fish like crazy, but sometimes the lure broke where the wire exits the head after only one good-sized fish. So:

   Is the wire thin? Yes.

   Are they good lures? Yes.

Are they for someone who wants to save money? No.

   Good luck!        jj

p.s. - I'm not sure, but I would guess you'd have an extremely hard time finding the same wire size and type from a vendor so as to make your own. I could be wrong, though.

the humdingers on tw are made in Louisiana ... they sell a combination of 1/4 oz. in combinations of indiana, colorado and willow leaf blades in 1/4 oz. Hold up pretty good ... can get down here at walmart for 2.79 ...

the 3/16 oz. lil mr. money by strike king is a well made spinner bait, too ... gets good results when downsizing ...

used to use the hank parker classic 1/4 oz. white ... bass annihilated it ... parker won a classic using it ... but it did not hold up as well but did catch lots of bass ... can't find 'em now as easily and no longer use it ...

Note: the classic spinner baits are available at tw ...

good fishing ...

I did pick up some from outlet bait and they had a 2 pack for 6.58, unfortunately limit 5 but that is ten more baits. Definitely found they aren't a money saver. Save that for the strike king bleeding bait spins which have been very good to me over the years.

This year we had really bad weather conditions that shut down all but the spin bite, and the war eagle won the day, so know I have a few backups.

My spinnerbaits are made up of probably 3/4 War Eagles. It's a simple question for me, would I rather catch more fish or fewer fish? The War Eagle catches more fish for me, end of story, not even close either.

I am going to treat them like Rage plastics, I will search for deals and stock up when I can. With the deals at Outlet Bait I will have 20 more War Eagles in my box after Christmas when I get them. It was my first order from them so we will see how it goes.

By being patient I have a healthy stock of Bandit 100s for the river and plenty of Menace grubs to last me a few years. Sales are awesome, except the ones where they are clearing out discontinued stock that we rely on.

They use this wire so that they can plate the heads and wires in silver or gold.

I'm a big fan of the War Eagle Screamin' Eagle. It's a 1/2oz head with a 1/4 oz. size frame and blades.
