Sounds like a nice upgrade to the old Ci4+, but I will miss the black.

 

I wish the 1000 and 2500 would have the same drag system at the 3000 and above. I mostly wish that because I like the 1000 size more then larger reels.

The picture is the stradic FL, not the vanford. The price is RRP. That's Australian money, which comes out to around $249 USD.

 

Shimano teased a spinning reel on their Facebook page and it definitely had red in it. I doubt they changed the color scheme much.

1000 sized reels are typically used for 4lb line or less. Felt drags start up much easier to protect light line. No reason to have a 20lb drag on a panfish reel.

So it is basically Stradic FL on steroids with 1oz less weight, for about 30-50 bucks more once it is become CI4+FD. I might get one of this in 1000 size. I dig long stroke spool, MGL counter balance rotor, and x protect. I wish shimano would add low speed gear for US market.

I use the 1000 size for most of my bass fishing. I like the lighter weight and slower line take up. 

I use 6 pound test on my 1000 size quite often but will go up to 20 lb braid if I'm throwing around docks or other cover.

My biggest complaint is the tiny short handles on the 1000 size shimano reels. Come on shimano. Give us longer handles.

It took years for them to put longer handles on the baitcast reels. How about longer handles and bigger knobs on the spinning reels too. I'm tired of these tiny flat knobs on the smaller reels.

I passed up a stradic CI4 for $150 a couple weeks ago knowing the new model would be coming out soon, and if they were to upgrade the CI4 like they did the FK its going to be worth the extra money.  I just hope it isn't over $250, once you spend that much your not to far away from a luvias.  The way I see it shimano has to have a few competing reels to the daiwa LTs. To me the FL isn't a direct competitor to the ballistic or tatula, being 2 ounces heavier.  I think the vanford will be shimanos rebuttal to the mid range priced LTs.  IMO as far as bang for the buck when it comes to spinning reels daiwa handily beats shimano until you spend $200.  I would think shimano would try to come up with answers to the moderately priced LTs, time will tell.

Totally agree here. I was gonna buy Stradic FL 1000 6.5oz for those MGL rotor, long stroke spool and x-protect, but weight of almost 1oz more killed it. I ended up with Ballistic FW 2500S 5.8oz and Kage 2000 LT 6oz. Love those LT reels.

Now if ci4+ the weight should be close and with those feature of FL, I might bite a bullet, since I still wanna upgrade my old ci4.

None of my rods are balanced enough such that an LT would be more enjoyable to fish with, unfortunately. I don't mind a little extra weight. I just bought a 3000 Ci4+ at 20% off back in April which I don't regret (initially bought the TwinPower and was disappointed, returned for Ci4+) and I am still pretty interested in the Vanford. I will likely wait until fall to pick one up at a discount (hopefully), otherwise I'll wait until spring. I have no use for a 3000 size reel between the months of Nov and May but I'll still want one!

@bwjayDon’t use reel to balance your rod, use balancer kit or DIY with chair leg cap. It will make the setup feel way better. BTW Tatula LT and Up are about the same class weight as CI4+.

The Kistler rods that make up the majority of my collection have a bulbous butt that basically requires you to drill into it to place weights inside. I am not willing to do that or tape some weights to the butt either.  The Tatula LTs are just a little bit lighter, but anyway. I'm not using my reels to balance my rods, I'm just using reels I enjoy using (like the Bantam) which just happens to provide better balance. The 6'8LMH-S Helium3 with the 3000 Ci4+ still balances a little further forward than I'd like, but it's not bad, so I don't worry about it. I'm not going to try to shave weight on my reels though.

That's a good point, but I rarely see it offered.

Granted, reels used to be heavy, but all reels today are lightweights by comparison.

The angler who's willing to spend extra money to reduce reel weight by 2 oz,

leaves himself no room to complain about top-heavy balance.

Some good comments above! A 1000 is my preferred choice for 

bass fishing, as I've mentioned for years here. I also agree with

the comment that you can just add weight to balance a kit out.

 

Bulbous rod ends notwithstanding, if you're not afraid to drill

out the end and stick some lead in there, it might be better

balanced  . I've done a bunch of rod tweaking myself. Not

usually on lifetime warranty (St. Croix) models, though.

New Kage reels look fantastic.
