Super User MN Fisher Posted July 6, 2020 Super User Posted July 6, 2020 Humminbird, Garmin and Lowrance sell kits/parts to convert a standard boat-mounted sonar to work as an ice-fishing aid. You need a portable power supply, but a small 8AH to 12AH battery should run the unit most or all of the day and they're not that heavy or large. 1 Quote
Super User WRB Posted July 6, 2020 Super User Posted July 6, 2020 Vexilar makes a portable ice fish finder unit. Tom 1 Quote
Super User gim Posted July 7, 2020 Super User Posted July 7, 2020 Most newer units can be converted to ice fishing, like MN Fisher said. That is something fairly standard on models the past several years. if the unit is 5+ years old, make sure you check that it’s ok to use in temps below freezing. I used to have a 2014 HDS7 and the manual clearly stated not to be used below 32 degrees F. 1 Quote
Jleebesaw Posted July 9, 2020 Posted July 9, 2020 Most people just use a sounder for ice fishing. Vexilar is the most common one i see around. Its real time sonar. If you use the ttpical boat sonar, you arent seeing real time data. Some units have live sonar/sounder function that can be turned on though. If i were going to get a unit for both, i would make sure it had this feature before buying it. 1 Quote
