Light88 Posted July 6, 2020 Posted July 6, 2020 So I need help with some of my bait casting reels (Lews Mach 1 speed spool, Abu Garcia blackmax and silvermax) almost all of them have this strange noise that happens if I reel a bit hard usually without a lure tied on. It’s almost like a gears rubbing together noise and I tried some troubleshooting myself and I thought it was my pinion gear and that it needed some oiling. After some oiling it didn’t really do anything and started happening to some other reels too. Is this because of using my baitcasting reels in the salt or some other issue? I just got a Tatula 100H and don’t want to ruin it by using it in the salt so please try and help. P.S. I wash and wipe down every reel. Quote
Tim Kelly Posted July 6, 2020 Posted July 6, 2020 If it doesn't do it when you're fishing then don't worry about it. Spinning the reels hard when you're at home will cause some funny noises. 1 Quote
The Bassman Posted July 6, 2020 Posted July 6, 2020 Saltwater is rough on reels. Rinsing is essential after every outing. The frame bearing under the pinion gear can get corroded real fast so maintenance is required frequently as well. 1 Quote

Richieg Posted July 6, 2020 Posted July 6, 2020 The Bass Man is correct about salt water. The sound you are hearing is coming from the bearings, not the gears. I am not sure about the Lew’s reel, but the two ABU’S are not salt water compatible. If you want to continue using them you will need to do internal cleanings on a frequent basis in addition to rinsing them after each use. Ultimately you should transition to reels that are saltwater compatible like the ABU in-shore bait casting reel. They have gaskets that seal out water. Quote
Super User FishTank Posted July 7, 2020 Super User Posted July 7, 2020 Saltwater.... None of those reels are rated for saltwater or inshore. A good read on bearings and saltwater. https://www.bocabearings.com/fishing-reel-bearing-tips-advice/reel-bearings-ready-for-bearing-overload-article Quote
Heartland Posted July 7, 2020 Posted July 7, 2020 Are you spinning the handle real hard while the reel is engaged? Quote

Not even that hard, I would do a sharp spin and it'll make a sound. But thanks guys, I'll look into more salt water reels with sealed bearings. Quote
