I just picked up three more X-ray blanks from the sale. Can’t beat $75 a piece. I got an Sj703,sj736 and the mb736, plus the carbon grips to go with them. I really enjoy building and fishing the blanks and have never had anything but great service and prompt shipping. 

Did anybody else take advantage of the sale?

Little bit of threadromancy, so I apologise. The X-ray sale is back on this month. We're you all happy with your purchases? What do the X-ray blanks have going for them compared to other sub-$100 blanks?

Extremely happy. I have bought 2 more since. Very light and very sensitive. They were very slow, 6-8 weeks. They say in their new ad that they have got that fixed and have inventory for same day shipping. I have not heard good or bad on that yet,

Thanks! Well, as long as I can have them ready for April, I'm good. LoL.

 

Are the specs on the manufacturer web site accurate? Or do they deviate in action or power from what is listed?

The M action seems right on. The 2 MH's feel a bit more powerful than I am used to for the action. Very misleading since they are so light.

Sounds perfect, I like an accurate Medium and a MH with some teeth.

The Xrays are higher modulus and lighter.

The sj703 turned out to be a lot lighter in action than the specs suggested. Definitely not a high end weight range of 3/4oz, I’d say 3/8oz would be more appropriate. The two 736’s were exactly as the specs suggest. The sj736 making a really nice light bottom contact rod for up to 1/2oz jigs. Somewhat similar to the loomis nrx ccr733 in action.

I ordered 3 X-Ray blanks about 3 weeks ago and they took about a week to arrive.

The $35 shipping cost +$10 a blank for excise taxes makes the deals less good but I'm still interested.

 

Interesting that they don't have a regular Medium in the lineup.

That's a pretty narrow functional weight range...

I have an SJ703. No way should that blank be rated for 3/4oz. More realistic would be 1/8 - 3/8.

 

the ratings NFC publishes for those Xray blanks are helter-skelter.

You are talking power when you are talking about lure weights and "lighter in action."  Action is described as slow, fast, Xfast, etc.  It's easy to do , but best to try to get it right before it becomes a habit not easily broken, and it can be confusing to others.  Please don't shoot the messenger, just trying to help.

When you pay retail the excise tax is included in the price, so you never see it, you pay excise tax on rods, reels, fishing line and tackle, etc.

I think, psychologically, I prefer not to see it as a line item then. ?

Yes, I noticed that the discounts apply when you add them to the cart. Depending on the type, you only seem to get the discount on the first blank of each type. I was looking at the X-rays due to the alleged extreme sensitivity. I got on a great pattern for a couple months this summer where I was really struggling to discern when a fish had the lure. I was using a good quality rod but I was still guessing when to swing on them. Was hoping to build a rod that would give me the edge in detection.

I have the X-Ray MB-733 which is rated as a ML up to 3/8 oz. I haven't built it yet, but it seems similar to other Medium rods that I've had and I'm betting it would throw 1/2 oz. I'm going to make it a spinning rod and use it for Ned Rigs and Shakey Heads. The MB-736 seems similar in power to a Heavy rated Dobyns rod, and also seems more powerful than my Conquest 843c, but only rated as a MH and up to 3/4 oz. Their ratings seem to be either a little under-rated or either right on. at least with those two blanks.

Ordered a pair of blanks on the 29th, got the shipping notification today and delivery is estimated for the 17th. Not amazing speed but it sounds like NFC is improving based on some of the awful things I've read regarding their shipping timelines.
