Riverside.bassin Posted July 5, 2020 Posted July 5, 2020 I’m looking to buy a casting setup to use for small to medium hardbody and soft bodied swimbaits, and probably some larg-ish jerkbaits. I’ll use it to target pike and big bass up north. Are there any rods you would suggest using for these applications (length, action, power)? thanks! Quote
Hewhospeaksmuchbull Posted July 5, 2020 Posted July 5, 2020 Have any weights on mentioned baits? For my lighter baits (RS-S-waver 120), I can get away with my FR765 Flip or my FR735. Although that pushing it a little. I have an Okuma guide select XH that I use for heavier baits (5oz), Huds, Gantrel, ect. I plan on a FR 795SB (2.5oz) to to take over the lighter baits. Quote
walleyecrazy Posted July 6, 2020 Posted July 6, 2020 I currently use a Dobyn's SA735C with some of my smallish glide baits like the S-waver 168 and my Golden Belt customs Harvester. While it isn't the ideal rod for it casting wise, it does just fine as long as I concentrate on my casting technique. I would definitely not go any bigger with the lures on that rod though. Those two are pretty much at, and probably past it's limits realistically. I could see this rod doing well with big jerkbaits too, though I haven't used it for that. Anything heavier than those baits and I always reach for my Leviathan Omega swimbait rod. Quote
Super User Hammer 4 Posted July 6, 2020 Super User Posted July 6, 2020 What is your budget for a rod..? I have a couple in mind. Quote
Riverside.bassin Posted July 6, 2020 Author Posted July 6, 2020 Sorry for the little info I gave before. I probably won’t be using baits above 2 - 2.5 oz. Also my budget is around $150. Quote
Hook2Jaw Posted July 6, 2020 Posted July 6, 2020 My Daiwa DXSB 8' Heavy Fast will toss beautifully down to ¾ and I haven't reached the upper limit yet, but I don't see any reason why it can't lob 6 ounces or more. It's a tad lighter than it's rated, but it's a capable rod for a bit over a bill. 1 Quote
Born 2 fish Posted July 6, 2020 Posted July 6, 2020 I really like my Dobyns fury 795 sb up to 3.5 oz. 1 Quote
