I have an old Abu 4600C narrow spool baitcasting reel that I haven't used for literally 30+ years. It's still in good shape, so I want to give it a shot with more modern line (I only used mono back in the day). What type, brand, and weight line would you recommend? I'm planning to use a 5-7 foot mono or fluoro leader if I spool braid. I don't fish heavy cover often, just the occasional tree and rocks, not much grass or lily pads.

My personal advice is to use, as a minimum, 12 lb. test Big Game. 15 lb. test is even better. The old synchronized-levelwind reels love larger-diameter lines.    jj

12lb test. Or 40lb braid with a proper drag adjustment,

You should probably service that reel before you put it on the water.  Those 4600Cs are awesome reels but having sat around that long, the old grease is surely to be putty.  Flush and oil the bearings, get some lighter fiber brake blocks, upgrade the drag to Carbontex, and clean and lube everything else and it'll be brought back to life.  If you need any replacement parts, you can get them from Jerry Foran at hookless.com

I have two 4600c reels. I still use one now. I like 15lb Big Game mono. Seems to work well on these reels.

I spooled 12 lb YZH on my Daiwa Millionaire 3H. Bought it in the mid-70’s. Reel works fine. Line works fine.

The level wind isn't hardened to accommodate abrasive super braids.

Big Game has been around since the early 80's, it's not new line type.

12 lbs to 14 lb FC of your choice will work. Sunline Defier Armillo Nylon mono is a modern line, 13 lb would be a good choice.

I would forget the leader and braid and just fill the thing with 12 or 15lb FC but I would put some cheap mono backing on it, maybe fill 30% of the spool.  Invizx has been my favorite FC so far.  Enjoy....  That is an awesome reel.

My nephews called me from Walmart standing in front of the fishing lines and asked me what they should use for my dad's old 5000C reels. They live at the beach so saltwater is not off the table. I gave them the exact same advice. BG 12 lb. I told them it's so cheap they can backlash it a few times and still have plenty of line to refill. It's the "family size" spool.

One of the best bass reels ever made.  The later ones were crap.  Hang onto yours.
