garroyo130 Posted July 3, 2020 Posted July 3, 2020 Looking for advice on a good combo for a toddler (3 yr old). Is it better to go with a Snoopy combo or something he can grow into? He went out with me this morning and reeled his first fish in ... been crying to go back all day. 1 Quote

Super User NYWayfarer Posted July 3, 2020 Super User Posted July 3, 2020 My son used a Superman spincast combo from Walmart at that age. The first couple of times we went I let him cast the plastic fish shaped plug it came with. When I caught a fish on my combo I let him reel it in. 1 Quote
Super User islandbass Posted July 3, 2020 Super User Posted July 3, 2020 What he has is perfect until age 5-6. Those snoopy/superhero/princess rods are ideal for that age in size and their simplicity. A serious 5-7 year old can handle a spinning setup but you’re still a couple years away from that, lol. 1 1 Quote

A cane pole at 5. A Mitchell 300 at 6. I agree. It would be an unusual 3 year old that would benefit from a spinning combo. OP, stick with a children's plastic set. If he is still interested at 5-6, then consider something for him to grow into. I used my Mitchell 300 for a lot of years. 1 1 Quote
Super User MN Fisher Posted July 3, 2020 Super User Posted July 3, 2020 What the others before me said. I had a cheap plastic combo that I used from age 4 to 7. For my 8th birthday I got a Mitchell 320...and used that until I couldn't find spare parts anymore (this was before the internet - so I had to find them local). 1 Quote

I bought the spinning one for my oldest when he was 2 for $10. He caught a bunch of fish on it but I burned the reel up playing with the dogs during the winter. Found a couple zebco goldcast 11 triggerspins on clearance at Academy for $2 each and hung one of those on it. Now my 3 year old wings a broken crankbait all over the place with that setup. 1 Quote

I watched the catfishandcarp youtube channel pull in 25lb channel cats with the spinning version, it'll hold up! Quote
CountryboyinDC Posted July 5, 2020 Posted July 5, 2020 Whatever you do, stay away from the KidCaster with no guides. Your son will definitely break the line and then reel all of said broken line back into the reel. You won't be able to figure out how to get the line threaded through this guideless system and you won't have a wireless signal so you can find a YouTube video that shows how to do this. After 15 minutes of pestering from your son and wife, you'll say 'just use my ultralight rig', which still is not entirely satisfactory because it has no mutant dinosaurs on it. Your son won't be able to cast it, so you'll be standing there doing that each time. Then he'll hook a big catfish, get scared and throw the rod into the pond. At least that's how it happen for me. Now we have 2 fishing rods for him we take everywhere we think he may be fishing, the other KidCaster has guides. 1 Quote
LCG Posted July 5, 2020 Posted July 5, 2020 Ugly stick youth combo is a decent combo for kids. Got my son one when he was 5 or 6, he is 9 now and still uses it. Quote
