Fishin Dad Posted July 3, 2020 Posted July 3, 2020 I have been catching a lot of fish on the whopper plopped and Choppo lately. The problem I am having is small pieces Of floating grass on the lures are making them spin and twist my line. I have used braid, mono, and copolymer. Have you guys used swivels? Does something else work to prevent this. I am obviously not fishing this in weeds. I use frogs and buzzbaits where appropriate. Let me know if you have solved this problem. Thanks!! Quote
VolFan Posted July 3, 2020 Posted July 3, 2020 If theres much grass a swivel is really your only option. Once the back binds its a line twist tornado. 1 Quote

It's a big reason why I don't fish them. Small neighborhood lakes I fish have surface vegetation everywhere. Like you said it doesn't take much to keep these baits from working right. A swivel only defeats the intended function of the lure by allowing the whole bait to spin. These are best used where you don't have to deal with vegetation. Weed edges are real hotspots, though as long as you can stay out of them. 1 Quote
Fishin Dad Posted July 3, 2020 Author Posted July 3, 2020 I know. It is frustrating, because there is really not much grass at all, but the little pieces of floating grass catch a hook or the tail and It is twist city. These darn pieces are like 2-3 inches that float in from miles away. I may try a snap swivel. I think my tourney partner mentioned he had heard about that somewhere. I do use other baits in weedy areas and had to switch over today, but the ploppers were working so well when they worked. Looks like I have some experimenting to do before I give up and switch over. Super User FryDog62 Posted July 3, 2020 Super User Posted July 3, 2020 I use what’s in the picture here - a 2 1/4 inch mini leader that Wayzata Bait makes. Small enough the fish don’t see it on a moving bait, doesn’t sink the Plopper’s nose, plus it provides a swivel and protection against most pike bite-offs. I don’t fish Plopper/Choppos or Chatterbaits without tying one on... Quote

I may have to stop when I am passing through next time. I might have to try the chatter bait idea too. The pike down here are INSANE this year. I would assume these would help with preventing having the line foul on the hooks on ploppers as well. 3 hours ago, WRB said: Just use a Spro Power swivel on a split ring. Tom Tom, that is what I was hoping would work. I am going to give it a try until I can find some of Frydog’s idea. Thanks. Quote
