Baseball 'n Bassin Posted July 2, 2020 Posted July 2, 2020 I went out for the first time in a month yesterday afternoon and caught 14 dinks, mostly on tubes. I went again this morning and caught 9 dinks, again mostly on tubes. I knocked frogs and spinnerbaits off of my list of lures I haven't caught bass on. When I was walking home from the pond I realized that there was one thing in common between both days (apart from the tubes.) I thought to my self "why would this only work near me? Is there any reason it can't work in florida, california, canada, or anywhere else?" The answer to those questions was no. The thing in common with both of those days was that I put the lures in the water. When the lures were out of the water I got 0 bites. If you cast the lures onto the land, the bass don't eat it but sometimes you catch a tree. I hope this can help you guys! Rui Quote
Herbert Lorenzo Posted July 6, 2020 Posted July 6, 2020 (edited) So true. I have dozens of lures that have never been in the water . Seems like many fishermen do the same , we hesitate to not use the same favorite lures and tell ourselves we will experiment with the other lures some other day . Hard to believe but I am sure some of these lures have been in the tackle box for I don't know how many years and have never gotten wet . Edited July 6, 2020 by Herbert Lorenzo Misspelled word Quote
Coldbasser Posted July 7, 2020 Posted July 7, 2020 ? I go out by myself & take my lures that I hardly if ever use & force myself to try them. Funny how they usually work if I work them. cheers rick Quote
Whatever Posted July 27, 2020 Posted July 27, 2020 There is a lot of wisdom in your observations. I am stubborn, and hesitate to try new gear or techniques. I find my self purchasing lures based on the fact I have used them for thirty or forty years, and they usually produce. Newer lures always have that question mark, so I hesitate to try them. When I do, and they don't produce, they sit in the tackle box forever. But If I catch one good fish on a given lure, I am faithful forever. I tie flies the same way. I frequently tie a pattern, and think "this will be lethal". than I tie two dozen more, even when it hasn't proven itself. Frequently, we are our own worst enemies. Quote
Miabucman Posted July 31, 2020 Posted July 31, 2020 I was talking about this with a fishing buddy this past weekend. A bad day on the water is better than a good day at work. Prepping for a little tourney, I began to realize that I have a ton of stuff that I have never tried. I think that we all get complacent and go back to what we are comfortable fishing (from types of lures to colors). I forced myself to change it up a bit and focused on some plastics that I overlook. Surprisingly enough, I caught a lot of fish! This also brings back memories of fishing with a buddy in Oklahoma when I was stationed there. My buddy, Ed, was just getting into bass fishing and he bought a bunch of cheap lures at Bass Pro out of the clearance bin. We were fishing in my secret spot (closed for most of the month due to being near an Impact Area) and he tied on the ugliest $1 lure that you have ever seen. He started yelling at me to help him and he pulled up a huge bucketmouth! 1 Quote
Jim Baker Posted August 2, 2020 Posted August 2, 2020 I agree with what you are saying. There are several factors for bass to hit, weather, time of day, and lure/bait, lure method that they are inclined to hit at the time. Once you intersect all the variables, bam, you get a big hit on something you might of thought would not work. I'm kind of new to big bass fishing so I'm learning as I go. So far the biggest bass I have caught was on a silver popper from the Bass Pro discount barrel in the isle. My son and his friend were fishing with other lures and weren't having any luck. That day I ended up with a 6 (one in my pic), 5, 3 pound bass on the popper and they caught nothing. After I left about 10:30 that morning I gave them the popper but they did not catch anything on it the rest of the day. Weird! ? Quote
