Super User Tywithay Posted June 29, 2020 Super User Posted June 29, 2020 Can't imagine spending $500 on anything Abu, but this is at least interesting. Very rare you see something that is actually new. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted June 30, 2020 Global Moderator Posted June 30, 2020 Should be a front runner in the "Ugliest in Show", category. That thing looks hideous. 2 Quote
Glaucus Posted June 30, 2020 Posted June 30, 2020 Imagine paying $500 for a spinning reel that isn't any different than any other spinning reel $150 and up, other than the ugliness. Quote

That's my fear with any Pure Fishing product. I don't know what makes it "ultra premium." If lightweight and magnesium is all they've got, I can get that on a Cadence reel for $100. I do like that they're at least experimenting with something out of the ordinary. Curious how small the gears are in order to streamline the gearbox that much. 2 Quote

I think ABU makes some decent higher end stuff. But like mostly everything else fishing, we don't get much of it over here in the US. In Japan ABU is highly respected and they get all kinds of very nicely done reels. I still prefer Daiwa though. 1 Quote

Japan prices seem to be more reasonable across all the companies though. I have seen the MGXtreme reels under $300 from Japan. Much better value vs performance when it's 30-40% cheaper. 1 Quote
Pantera61 Posted July 2, 2020 Posted July 2, 2020 Abu engineers have designed some of the more advance reels produced. It’s a good thing they manufacture the REVOs in Korea or you wouldn’t be able to afford them. Abu also has a higher status in Japan than in America. 2 Quote

I just swapped out a revo x frame, old one said made in Korea, new one said made in China. Quote

It wasn't my reel, I was replacing the frame of the revo x for a friend of mine. He dropped a box on the reel and the frame cracked. I cant comment on the others. Quote

They are Doyo Korea designs built in both China and Korea. They're still my favorite Doyos though. X2. I doubt if Abu designs any low profile reels these days. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the last Swedish made low profile Abu reel was the Torno series. The other night I dug out and old 4600 C3 from about 1994 or so, took it apart, cleaned, lubed, and spooled it up. Still casts as good as it did back then. A Swedish made Abu low profile would probably cost a fortune but it would be a heckava reel. Quote

Super User NYWayfarer Posted July 2, 2020 Super User Posted July 2, 2020 For some reason that spool design makes me think line will get caught under it. Some reels I have owned had that issue, 13 Fishing Creed comes to mind. Usually happened when using light lures and had some line spill off the spool while reeling. Quote

I just ordered a Revo ALC BF7 from Amazon Japan last night, came out to $170-ish after shipping. Smoking deal for an ultralight baitcast reel. Comes in at 5oz on the scale too. 2 Quote
Big-Bass Posted April 23, 2021 Posted April 23, 2021 Any idea when the Zenon is supposed to debut? I see Mercer fishes them on TV but I don't see anywhere that is offering them for sale. https://www.insideline.net/peteweighsin/2020/7/3/lighten-up-francis Quote
