Underspin question

Okay I'm about to restart fishing tourmaments in a few weeks after a 4 year break. I used to fish an underspin alot of St Clair. To me an underspin = finesse spinnerbait. To my question, is putting a Keitech on the back of an underspin too much action given the blade is already throwing off alot of thump? Am i better putting on a trailer that is more subtle?

I like both

An Action type trailer (boot tail) in warmer water temps and something that does less (fluke) in cooler water. 

Both work well on the fall with and without a tight line.

But you already know that.

I've mainly fished it on St Clair in the spring with the fluke off the back. That bait is absolutely killer in late April and early May. I wasn't sure if with the vibration from the boot tail and the blade there was too much going on.

IME - they both work early & late season,

although I don't fish them a ton. 

I have success when I work it 'slow(er), regardless of the time of year or the water temps.

Just seems the boot tail thump gets more bites when the waters warmer. 

Finally, a Big Underspin with a 5.5 inch SK Shadalicious Hollow body swimbait trailer is a BIG Player south of the border for us.  The water temps are in the high 80's usually.  Giant green bass totally choke the thing and the one we use has an 8/0 hook !

I use Keitech 3.8 Swing Fat's on 3/8's and bigger underspins. 

I use 3.3's on smaller ones.   

For me cloud free, clear water = underspin or swim jig

Wind/clouds/murky = chatterbaits

Is it strange that I’ve not noticed any fishing improvement with an under spin vs. plain paddletail without an underspin?

 

i have yet to encounter any scenario when swimbait on an underspin was decidedly more productive than without the underspin.

I tend to agree with that.

It's seems that overall bulk may have a big influence

True because that paddletail throws off its own thump but I think there are days where the flash from the underspin blade makes a difference. However, i primarily fish clear water lakes so that can make a difference too.
