Slowly of the past couple of years I have been getting rid of stuff but always seemed to buy more. Well I finally decided to get rid of a lot of it because it isn't used and just in the way. So far I have about 100 hard baits NIP set aside for cull but need to find another box for more. I keep finding stuff that I do not remember buying including rods which is crazy.

Allen, I've found that "not remembering buying" or simply an inability to bring back the feeling behind an excited purchase from say, 30 years ago happens more frequently as I get older.

I did a thorough inventory of my stuff - all the way to the back of the hall closet - packed it up and brought it down to an annual fishing and hunting flea market. This sell off of unused gear, some of which was 40 years old, provided a bit of cash and more room, some of which has been filled with new stuff that I do use.

It gives you a lighter feeling and that's a good thing.

But what if you make a mistake and get rid of something you might need?  Must have been a reason for the original purchase?  What purpose does empty storage space serve?  Hoarding tackle, isn't the same as hoarding other useless items.

I’m always re evaluating my gear, because I only want my fishing collection comprised of things that I regularly use.

Just sold off a bunch of stuff the other day

I do the same thing....buy tons of stuff, don't remember why I bought it, and sell most of it here on the flea market at a discount. But hey.... it's fun trying new stuff, and once in awhile I find something new that makes it's way into the normal rotation of things I do.

Can't tell you how many times I have had a "got to have this one" moment only to get home and there is the same bait, color and all.  Then it is scary when I do not remember buying the one I have.  My wife calls it "bass bait brain dead"?

I cull my tackle all the time.
But I must buy some extremely loyal stuff because it keeps coming back!

I resolved a long time ago to not get worried about excess tackle.  It will be a problem for whoever outlives me or the public administrator.

My fishing tackle choices might change - they have in the past.   There was a time when I was boat less, and I got into bank fishing for catfish.  Believe it or don't but you need different gear for reservoir fishing or river fishing or tail race fishing.   There is some cross over - but some situations require different gear.   The fact, that gear hasn't gotten wet in several years, is not a good reason to get rid of it - I might want to or be forced to get back into bank fishing.

Same thing for crappie fishing - I got buddies that are seriously into crappie fishing - just as much or moreso than I'm into bank fishing - so I got some crappie baits & gear.   I don't go very often, but when I do I want decent gear to fish with.

Then there are the  one of's.   I wanted a rig to throw ounce to 2 ounce slab spoons for wipers into a tailrace, so I got one.  The float & fly seemed like a good idea at the time, so I got one, didn't like it & got another one, 3rd time was a charm.  (To be fair, this also doubles as a decent crappie dipping rig )

Once I got a chance to go Muskie fishing in Minnesota, so I got a Muskie rig.

Point is, I don't see anything wrong with excess fishing gear & I built a fishing shed to prove it when I outgrew my basement & garage.

I've got a rule.  One tackle box.  One rod holder.  If I want something new, I have to get rid of something old or find a clever way to make it fit.  I've got a  computer room, a music room, and a photographic darkroom.  I'm done with hobbies that take up so much space that they need their own room.  And both my cars have to fit in the garage, along with all of my tools.

I have it bad because my grandfather was a bait hoarder too. He left me boxes of old wooden plugs from the 40’s and 50’s. I doubt they have any collector value because none of them have boxes and most are in pretty sad condition. There’s really no social activity around fishing where I am, or at least none I’m aware of, so I guess my wife will toss or auction it all after I’m gone.

Mine says if I die she is just going to get a roll off dumpster and throw it all away. My friends have told her to just call them and they will remove it all for her.

How?  How on earth do you get rid of that bag of plastics you bought back in 1997 that you have never used and if you have never caught a fish on?  How?  What if I am fishing and that bag of plastics is the absolute ticket that day and I need it?  How do I get rid of a lure I have never used and is guaranteed to catch me my pb 10 years down the road?  How do you know what to purge?  How?

I did this once, and to this day I wonder if I had this bait or that bait to use. I also did it when I was less knowledgeable too, so that means I got rid of some good stuff. In my case it was only a walmart sized bag of various plastics, but I bet I have thought of a use for most of what was in that bag over the years. The ones that hurt the most are the riverside baits and BPS bubble fry style baits.

I love looking at tackle. 2  66qt. tubs would take me awhile. Allen, it's people like you that are an example to show my wife that I don't spend too much $$ on fishing stuff. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. I encourage others to fess - up with their "over purchases" to help us all...

I suffer from too much fishing stuff also - every single lure I have would catch a bass but I'm kind of into fishing really big baits or the little rig anymore.

For the last couple of years I've just handed boxes of lures to young guys just starting to fish - just need more young guys around I reckon because I still have much more than I can use.

In 1988 I was living in Eastern WA and decided to move to Alaska.  I took almost all of my bass fishing gear to a local tackle shop in Spokane and sold it. I needed every dollar I could get for the move, and thought I would be fly fishing for trout and salmon sure I wouldn't ever miss it.  Now I am back to bass fishing and have more gear than before.  I still find myself wishing I had all of my old tackle, if for nothing else than to remind me of good times gone by.  Luckily I have managed to find and buy almost every lure I had on ebay.  Problem is, in order to get the lures I wanted, I also had to buy the lot or box that included the lure I wanted.  I guess that isn't really a problem.  I might catch my PB on a lure that came in a lot I didn't even want.  Also a bad move financially.  I had to pay 25 dollars to replace a River Runt in a rare color, that was exactly like one I originally found on the bank when I was 13. I'm sure glad I don't invest in stocks.
