LCG Posted June 28, 2020 Posted June 28, 2020 Hoping for some advice. Fishing a local pond in Southern Ontario, 30 + degrees celcius (90 ish fahrenheit), humid, moderate wind, highly pressed lately due to COVID-19. Pond is fairly large, some sludge in areas, lots of weeds and grass. Took the kayak and fished the perimeter, focusing on shaded areas and lay downs, as well as a few deep clear areas with a frog, spinnerbait, 1/4 oz beaver bait Texas rigged, weightless Texas rigged senkos, trick worms, 1/2 oz jig with craw trailer. Water is dirty, maybe a foot of visibility. Nothing, no bites. Two weeks ago was catching them left and right. Any ideas. Some big ones in the pond 4-6 lbs, but can't buy a bite this weekend. Quote
Super User BrianMDTX Posted June 28, 2020 Super User Posted June 28, 2020 I feel ya. A week or so ago I felt like I was hooking a bass on every other cast. Lately it’s been a few dinks. But I did catch five this morning, including two that were 2 lb’ers. I do not see a wacky rig in your list. I switched from green pumpkin to a watermelon 5” Senko WR and it made a difference. Try a WR and switch up colors. Quote
LCG Posted June 28, 2020 Author Posted June 28, 2020 Just now, BrianMDTX said: I feel ya. A week or so ago I felt like I was hooking a bass on every other cast. Lately it’s been a few dinks. Try a WR and switch up colors. The pond is so grassy it's hard to wacky rig, even with weed less hooks. I was using a watermelon red senko ironically but weightless texas rigged. Congrats on the five this morning. I would be happy with one just to get me through the week Quote
Super User BrianMDTX Posted June 28, 2020 Super User Posted June 28, 2020 This pond has a lot of algae. Have to clean the hook on almost every cast. But they hammer WR so well it’s worth the hassle. I tried rigging it weedless (not a weedless hook, but turning the hook back into the Senko), but IMO it changes the action too much. Besides, 95% of my catches are on the initial cast. Most times I cast, let it sink and if no strikes I reel it in and cast again. 1 Quote
papajoe222 Posted June 29, 2020 Posted June 29, 2020 Do you know the water temp. I have a feeling the fish have just spawned and that is one of the toughest times to catch them. The other thing that could be happening is very unstable weather. You know, one day bright sunny skies and the next heavy rain or storms followed by more bright sunny skies. If that's the case, a few days of steady weather should improve their attitude. 2 Quote
Super User Hammer 4 Posted June 29, 2020 Super User Posted June 29, 2020 Yep, if the water temps rose just recently, could be in the spawn, which would account for the lack of catching bass. OTH, if your getting what feels like "nibbles" it's probably males moving your bait off of their beds. Kind of a frustrating time for bass fishing. Quote
MacJig Posted June 29, 2020 Posted June 29, 2020 Yup, I know the frustration. In May and throughout most of June my local pond was being very nice to me. I had a very long stretch where I forgot who the skunk even was. I went out yesterday and nothing. Not a bass. Not a pan fish. Nothing. Not even a bite save what looked to be a Rockie as he followed it to shore. Those are frustrating times. But all you can do is pick yourself back up, get back out and hope the bite is on again. Quote
Jleebesaw Posted June 29, 2020 Posted June 29, 2020 Yea, its spawn related. Im in northern ny. Im 20 minutes from the border, so your conditions are similar to mine. The lakes i have been fishing have been on fire until last weekend. I didnt get out at all during the week, and man did some changes take place. After the hot weather had the surface temp up to high 70's- low 80's things really slowed down. The beds are empty, and they are hard to find right now. I was supposed to fish a small tournament sunday. Went to that lake saturday and only got 4 bass all day. Found them by just fan casting on weedy flats in 4-8ft of water. Skipped the derby because we figured we would get our butts kicked, fishing like that. Turns out that just north of 8lbs on 3 fish won it! Shouldnt have chickened out. Could have been in the running.
