I think I’m going keeP looking for a the bantam around me as I own one, love it but it’s sold out everywhere in Canada. the tranx 301 and Calcutta 301 is too big. The tranx 201 is only offered in hg (7 gear ratio). The Calcutta 201d I was thoroughly impressed with. Mind blowingly smooth, but I’ve never fished round reel and would like to try one before dropping 500 dollars on one. I don’t like the way you have to rip it apart to set it up. The bantam I have and love, I’ll Look into ordering a longer handle for it as suggested. If the 200D reel is right for you that is all that matters. Enjoy your new outfit. Tom 1 Quote

What line do you intend to use? Shimano Tranx 300 series 5.8:1 would be a good reel IMO. Tom Exactly what I was going to recommend. I have actually done some deep cranking on both the 5:1 and 7:1 tranx 300’s and they both make it so easy. If you really want to make it as easy as possible get a 5:1 tranx and get a power handle to put on it, once you get used to the power handle it is so nice for more powerful applications. Quote

Tranx 300 is a bit overkill unless you are throwing 10 XDs, Cloud 9 25s, Z Boss 25s religiously there is just no reason to have it. The Tatula 200 and Calcutta 200D are plenty capable. Have even fished a Ryoga CC and it's amazing! Never figured a 6XD would call for a Tranx 300 but to each his own lol Quote
Matt_3479 Posted July 1, 2020 Author Posted July 1, 2020 Thank you everyone. i figures a 7 gear ratio tranx is probably little less then ideal so I’m going skip the tranx. I found a bantam so got it on hold so I can grab it Friday. Problem now is rod showed up with broken tip lol. So back to looking for a second rod. Hoping I can get it sorted out (money back and shipped) before vacation so I can buy second rod. still looking for longer handle but will make it work for now. So right now the set up will be megabass orochi xx launcher paired with shimano bantam. Will spook up with 12lbs sniper I believe (thought I had some but it’s 16lbs). If for some reason I find the bantam less then ideal I have another rod a 6 gear ratio would work decent on and can do some switching around and get something different Quote

Never figured a 6XD would call for a Tranx 300 but to each his own lol Yea it’s not necessary at all, it’s just nice taking a huge amount of the resistance away which is one of the main complaints with a deep crank. I could reel in a double #10 bladed musky in-line spinner with a 200 size reel and probably catch fish, but I throw it on a tranx 500 low gear because it makes a bait that usually takes a lot of effort to reel in and makes it quite easy, making the whole fishing process a lot easier when doing it for long periods of time. A tranx 300 casts smaller baits surprisingly well. I know it’s not necessary and heavier than most bass reels, but if you use one with a deep crank you will know why I’m recommending it. Another guy on this forum took my advice recently and got a 5.1 tranx 300 and is in love with it for even small mid sized cranks, and his previous reel was a regular 200 size. Quote
rangerjockey Posted July 2, 2020 Posted July 2, 2020 I use a E5. Also have a Tranx 300 on my swimbait rod and really once it's actually on the rod and you fish with it, really doesn't feel that much bigger than a 200 size. I would have no problem putting it on a crankbait rod. Quote
Matt_3479 Posted July 4, 2020 Author Posted July 4, 2020 as luck would have it rod showed up Tuesday for my birthday. Upon inspecting it I notice tip was broken. Well thank god yesterday I found another one in stock 1.5hr drive from home. Getting there and they had the 6 gear bantam too!! Perfect timing as I leave in an hour for my fishing trip 2 Quote

Perfect timing as I leave in an hour for my fishing trip I am sort of in the same boat as you are. I saw you said you also owned a Curado K. I was curious why you never seemed to consider one for this purpose? Same weight but the K has a lot more line capacity for this type of fishing and about half the price. Again, I am not saying you made the wrong choice I just wanted some insight into your thought process as it might help me out in mine. Quote

Well I currently have 2 bantams now and prefer the feel of them in general: your right for the style of fishing the K would of been great. But personally I don’t like my k. It casts a mile, it feels nice, looks awesome but has a manufactures defect that’s super hard to explain and sent it back and still has the problem. Best way I can try and explain it is, when tension is on the line and I press the clutch release. It will not re engage. The handle will spin and spin and the gears just grind as almost like the teeth are juuusst too far apart. Once tension is released no problem. example would be on a cast if a fish happen to hit it right when it hit the water I’d have no way of reeling it in. It would just grind and free spoon until slack hit the line. Another example is if I reel in and boat flip but have the fish too high and press the thumb release/clutchbar to lower to a more workable height I can re engage until I put slack in the line. Quote

I have several and love every one. btw - even if you think it is - please do not say "it's too heavy" A-Jay I have a Calcutta 150 and it has been perfect for larger crankbaits and spinnerbaits. 5:8 to 1 gear ratio. Can get some really good bargains in the used market. 1 Quote
mrpao Posted July 12, 2020 Posted July 12, 2020 I love to fish crankbait and spinnerbaits. I have multiple combos just for those techniques. I only use low gear ratios for those techniques. I do love my rounds reels. I have different versions of the Calcuttas and Conquest. All are great reels. If I had to get another low gear ratio reel. It would be the bantam mgl in the 5.5:1 gears. I have three of these. They are awesome. One thing that will help is to get a longer handle. 95mm or longer will really help with the cranking. Quote
