Looking at this rod .. 6'8 or 6'10 medium heavy/Mod. fast tip.

I'm thinking of giving this a shot as a skipping stick.

Researching on preferences on skipping there as always so much out there... for myself just learning to better skipper is a medium heavy with a moderate fast tip a good start.. lil more whip from the tip? I'm talking more soft plastics than jigs.

Keep in mind that you will still need to be able to get a good hook set and land the fish.  A moderate action rod is not typically used for jig fishing, as you mentioned they have a lot of flex.  This flex does not lend itself to great hook sets with jigs.  I would pick a rod that is a little faster with a soft tip.

The 6’10” may have enough power but you will definitely be limited to smaller light wire hooks. An 1/8 oz weight and 3/0 would prob be the absolute max. They make a 6’10 Heavy fast that would be much more suitable

Everyone says soft tip but don't say what action tip they use for skipping,..moderate fast, fast, extra fast.. soft tip to me would be moderate fast.. fast is stiffer and extra fast the stiffest. They usually just mention the power. So what is soft for everyone,, its next to impossible to get hands on these rods before you purchase. All my other rods are Favorite,, They don't have anything in 6'8 to '6'10 to fit the bill from what I see.

Actually, it works the opposite of that. An XF tip is the softest which allows the rod to get into the backbone higher up the rod whereas a Moderate tip, being stiffer will carry more weight and require more force to bend the rod into the backbone.

Here's a couple of charts:

This always confuses me. Just the terms in general.  I just have in my head more whip, bend in load up is softer.

Anyways, I ordered a St. Croix Mojo Bass Casting Rod Med Hvy/Fast

Keep in mind that action only defines where the rod stops bending and reaches the backbone of the rod.  The part of the rod that bends can have very different characteristics. Some take very little force to bend and would be considered a soft tip others can require more pressure and would be considered a faster tip.   Power and Action are the two big things to understand in rods, tip characteristics tend to be a  little more subtle and used to really dial in a technique specif rod to a particular users preference.  My .02

Don't know a thing about skipping with a bait caster.  When I need to skip, I use spinning gear.  I know with spinning gear, I can skip with a whippy tip or a more stout tip, just change your action a little bit.  My guess is that a similar principle applies to bait casting gear, in that I think that the right reel is more important than the "best " rod.  They tell me at Rogers in Liberty that they can't keep the higher ratio Curado DC reels in stock and that the guys that are buying them are using them for skipping baits, so that's where I'd start.

I already have that real and is what is going to be taken off another rod and put on the St. Croix I ordered. Rod is important to me as wanted something a little shorter.

In the falcon rod lineup I would use a heavy rod. Medium heavy in the falcon line really isn’t the rod for plastics.

6’10” or 7’ heavy falcons are what I use.  The 6’10” and 7’ med heavy are a topwater rod in my opinion.

I don't know about that.  I used to have the Falcon Eakins Jig Special, which was a 6'10" finesse jig rod.   When Eakins parted company with Falcon, ( and I don't know the story behind that )  that rod became the Finesse Jig Special.  Rated from 3/16 to 5/8 weights.

I used to have the Eakins Jig Special, broke it ( kinda my fault) and Falcon replaced it for a modest amount of money with the Finesse Jig Special.  I love this rod for throwing soft plastics on a jig head.   Pretty much the only jig head I throw on it is the 1/4 oz Brewer Spider Slider.   Smaller Lizards, Stick-o paddle tail worms, Slider worms all work great.

Using this rod with the Eakins jig, I find that it throws the 5/16 jig with a smaller trailer great and I think it is a little overpowered when you try to throw the heavier 7/16 Eakins jig, no matter what trailer you try on the heavier jig.

So it is kind of a one trick pony rod, but IMO it does that one trick real well.

The Head Turner is also a 6'10" rod that is a lot of fun to fish plastics and lighter Jigs on.
