For decades I've been telling people to stop pouring soda on bleeding fish.  Now there's a study that backs that up:

Like I've always said, use a pinch of "Please Release Me" formula, which is designed for injured fish, and it will be much better off.

You can use hydrogen peroxide in your livewell tank as well. A good working tank is necessary. Circulation and aeration.

You got that right!

As a holistic healer and herbalist there's a pill formula that has been proven successful with humans and animals to stop bleeding without causing blood clots.  It got famous with GI soldiers during the Vietnam war when they noticed all the soldiers carrying something 'more valuable that gold'.   Yunnan Bai Yao.  A small pinch will help heal any wound faster and stops bleeding almost right away.

I've always been told that water "clots" fish wounds the best and that getting it back in is the best thing for it.

Putting anything on a fish wound seems like a bad idea. I've caught bass with big chunks missing from them, probably from bird claws, and I doubt the bird dressed the wound properly.

Companies don't want to admit what is actually in their live well additives so I don't like the idea of using it and letting it get into the water, even if it actually worked. They make pretty wild claims with no evidence. And yes I have a bit of a bug up my rear end for this stuff, sorry.

Studies have shown that additives are not effective. Big write-up if anyone wants to read it. In my opinion though it is up to the companies to prove their claims and they can't or won't.

https://www.researchgate.net/publication/272477468_Effectiveness_of_Livewell_Additives_for_Increasing_Largemouth_Bass_Survival

...the consistent trend of higher mortality with livewell treatments during the field experiments suggests that additives may impart additional negative stressors that increase mortality. Our results also suggest that fish size and ambient water temperature may have a greater influence on delayed mortality observed during competitive angling events than specific livewell additives.

........

Many organizations continue to sponsor black bass tournaments during late spring and summer months when ambient water temperatures are at the highest. Although a variety of practices have been adopted to reduce initial and delayed tournament mortality, our results suggest the benefits of livewell additives on post release survival of competitively angled largemouth bass are minimal; water temperature when tournaments are held and the size of fish angled appear to be more important. Our results suggest that tournament organizers should consider conducting events when ambient water temperatures are cooler. In addition, tournament organizers should consider alternative rules and formats that may result in less physiological stress on fish

Reminds me of 60 Minutes last night - a story that featured researchers that found that probiotics may actually deter the promotion of good gut bacteria.

What if the fish needs to wash down a shad with a nice fizzy beverage?

There will always be the Mountain Dew crowd who thinks it heals everything.

Over the counter 3% hydrogen peroxide 1/2 cup to 15 gallons in your livewell oxygenates the water and doesn't harm the fish.

Sure-Life products are your friend.

The study mentioned above did not use Sure-Life products. The fish were at tournaments treated by a competitor brand that was given away by the same tournament organization.  That competitor brand uses chemicals that actually burn fish gills, causing bass to "dance around" and be "more lively" in the livewell (because they're in pain!).  The damage and stress, in turn, causes increased delayed mortality.

Sure-Life products do not have any of these chemicals.  But they do contain, in part, a sedative that helps fish relax and reduce stress.  If you open a livewell full of fish treated with Catch-and-Release Formula, you'll see some pretty chill fish, which is what you want to see.

Sure-Life products also contain anti-bacterials to help prevent infection.  In essence, the fish leave the livewell in better condition than when they entered it.

Weigh it too...can't forget that...but ya, unless it's a 'keeper' for the freezer - right back in the water.

Grandsons and I had a few fished tanked yesterday. Wanted to grab some dimensions and pics and get them back in the water. Tanked them while we were fishing a certain stretch of the lake. Fished were not injured, all were good jaw hooked. My Tracker has decent livewell functions. Timed fill and Timer aeration. They were in great shape and not in there very long. 95% of the time it is immediate release. Grandsons like to tank them to see them awhile. It's all good and we treat them with kids gloves. Hydrogen peroxide is a good, safe and cheap additive. Get it at CVS, Rite-Aid or grocery store. Store it in a heavy Duty Zip lock bag. Cap will seal good but bag will be safe. Get a pool thermometer to keep an eye out for tank temps. I guess some of the tournament guys here have digital readouts, I'm not that sophisticated. There are probably a few decent videos out there. Not that I know that for sure.

It should never come as a surprise that for profit companies act in a manner biased towards profit...they are there to sell a product, not to do the best thing for you or the fish necessarily.

Maybe if I feel like I've got a double digit in hand, but until then, on the board and off.

Well, you'd never weight one caught up here then...that's our state record.

Well, you won't be fishing for bass then if you want anything DD size up here.

I don't know why you understood the only reason I fish for bass is to catch a double digit, but I would like to say that is not the case.  I exclusively fish from a kayak.  Weights do not matter to a lot of kayak anglers, generally, and we normally judge the quality of our catch by the length.

What matters to me is a quality fish depending on the area.  A three, four pound smallmouth would probably make my day.  A largemouth of above average size depending on location would as well.  :)

edit : "oh, I would," pertained to bass fishing and not catching a bass over ten pounds.

I dunno, I fished in MN a lot last year, I would say the fish up there are plenty sizable...and even though the records for LMB/SMB currently are in the 8's, they could go higher, you won't know until you go catch one that big, not trying at all is a surefire way to not get a DD...

You guys have some nice Smallies up there. Keep fishing them. Don’t worry about that state record. A 5 lb. Smallie is a nice fish anywhere.

Good fishing.
