It also is not the ideal placement when I put a lure cover over on. When the hook keeper is above the reel seat this works much better. I was surprised as well. I thought the Steez would be more powerful, which is why I had used it with 20# instead and put the 16# on the NRX. I hooked into a 5+ # largie on Saturday (open water) and I had no problem getting the fish to shore, whatsoever. Unfortunately my line snapped when I was about to get the fish on land... I fish mine on 40lb smackdown on braid to leader, usually 16-20lb fc100. I fish 3/4 oz jigs with a heavy trailer (yamamoto cowboy) without it feeling overloaded at all. I wonder if the little bit of stretch you get when you work the bait with fluorocarbon is why it feels less powerful. I just went out after reading your review and drug a 1/2 jig on some rocks. It's plenty sensitive but it's a different feeling than the nrx. It's a solid feeling deep in the blank, not a vibrating feel like an NRX, it's just different. I suspect you'd have no problem even moving bigger fish in the direction you chose to. With braid to leader I feel like this will be my heavy cover Florida speed worm rod in the winter. Quote

My feeling might be based on the fact that the NRX has a faster taper than the Steez. The Steez therefor loads a bit slower into the backbone. Both should be good for 3/4oz lures. Curious how you work the leader on the Steez? Does your connection know pass any guides, or is it just a short one that sits "outside" all the time? Quote

I have no problems with it going through the gm guides in the bottom contact. (Alberto knot) the nrx did gave a little issues with the knot. Quote
jrk Posted October 10, 2020 Posted October 10, 2020 I've recently purchased an NRX 916. I don't use this rod for anything that would come close to falling into its weight rating, and have not problem launching a 1/2oz frog, etc. I like a rod that is faster than slower, and I don't like a mushy rod. What I do not like about the rod is the shorter handle, or at least what I perceive to be a shorter handle. I've got a St. Croix Legend X 8'6" Heavy, and like the length of this handle. I've been curious about the Daiwa Steez AGS 8' Heavy (extra fast). For those that might know, how does the handle length of the Steez compare to something like the NRX? Appreciate the info! Quote
UmairF Posted November 4, 2024 Posted November 4, 2024 Hey I know it’s been a while since the last post on here but hoping to get some insight on this: I fish mainly in WI grass fisheries with some occasional mixed rock/gravel. Want something for fishing weedline edges in 7-20ft of water. Would be nice to be able to flip a jig/texas rig to dragging a football jig. Mainly in the 3/8-1/2 WITHOUT plastic trailer range for jigs. I would love something from the 2021 Daiwa Steez, NRX+, and Megabass P5 lines. I’m looking at the newer Steez from 2021. More specifically the Bottom Contact 2. The rods I’d compare it with for the applications I’m looking for are the NRX+ 894 and the Megabass P5 FMJ (2023 revamp). Anyone able to shed some light on these rods? I can provide more context if needed. Thanks, Umair Quote
Bandersnatch Posted November 11, 2024 Author Posted November 11, 2024 I have the bottom contact 2, the power pitch from that line. While the bottom contact 2 is awesome I just feel way more fluid with the power pitch. Idk if the reel seat is slightly different on the bottom contact or if it’s just the rod length but if flipping and pitching or even a little longer casting I prefer the power pitch. Very similar to the NRX 873CRR Quote
woolleyfooley Posted November 11, 2024 Posted November 11, 2024 Has anyone who’s used a steez ags or an NRX give an opinion on how they compare to a Dobyns champion extreme as far as sensitivity is concerned? Quote

The Daiwa rod may have a counter balance weight added to the butt to off set the rod length feeling tip heavy. Tom Totally agree with this !!! I've been criticized lots of times that I've said this. Back in the days I had a couple of the dobyns extremes. Honestly it's a solid rod that is well balanced and has a decent visual appearance. What always bugged me with the dobyns was that it's rating was completely off. A Dobyns rated 'heavy' was a 'medium-heavy' at best. That's why I run the dobyns extremes 704c as my cranbait combo. 😉 Sensitivity on these rods is good, but quite a bit off from a Steez or a NRx imo. Quote

I’d really like to try a steez or nrx to see the sensitivity difference for myself. I feel like the champion extreme is very sensitive, so it’s hard to imagine how much better the steez/nrx would feel. When you say the sensitivity is quite a bit off, would you say it would make a noticeable difference in detecting bites? For example, sometimes when I’m fishing a Texas rig I’ll think to myself “was that a bite? Or was it my bait falling off a piece of grass?” Would the steez/nrx make a noticeable difference here? I use Fluorcarbon line for the slack line sensitivity by the way. Thanks! Quote
