AmmoGuy Posted June 25, 2020 Posted June 25, 2020 I have a couple of the Coastal SVs in 7.1. Fantastic reels. I think they pitch at little better than my Tatula CT, and definitely easier to skip. I want an 8 speed reel for a new jig rod, and was considering going with the regular Tatula SV 103 this time. However, as long as SO has the Coastal for $175, it might remain the smarter buy? Anyone have both reels? Other than the longer handle, deeper spool, and aluminum side plate, the appear to be the same reels? Can anyone contrast their function? Quote
Super User Tywithay Posted June 25, 2020 Super User Posted June 25, 2020 I had both, but sold the 103 as it didn't really benefit my fishing. In theory, the 103 will cast lighter baits better than the Coastal. Mostly due to lighter weight spool+line. Aside from that, I haven't seen any advantage over the Coastal or Elite. I still worry about the gear sideplate over the long term. They're still relatively new to the market. Time will tell I guess. If it were me, I'd keep buying Coastals before they take the price back to normal. Quote

Plus the Coastal pitches pretty darn well, and is probably better "all around" than the Elite P/F. And yea, I worried about the extra line weight at first... but the Coastal will buzz a weightless 5" Dinger as far as I'll ever want to cast one, so I'm happy with that. I wouldn't want to throw a little ned rig in the wind.... but that's what spinning reels are for. Quote

They are asking way too much for these stinkin Tatulas these days IMO. All noted. Both of my Coastals are really smooth, like dead smooth. After using them, my Revos and other Tat feel like Mickey Mouse reels. I'm not naive to the fact that their are obviously nicer reels out there, and I have no problem spending more on a reel, IF I thought my uses justified it. But so far, the Coastals have done everything I've asked of them, and done it in a pretty refined way (from my point of view). Can you elaborate on what what underwhelmed you for money ($175)? I'm open to being sold on a different, similarly priced reel, if there are notable advantages to it. Quote

Even if the new one is smooth I doubt it will feel as nice as any of my Alphas. My Tatula Type R 1st gen while smooth is nowhere near as nice and refined feeling as my Alphas or TD Zillion. It is very sloppy and clunky feeling by comparison. Those are much higher end reels but used prices but then very close to a new on sale Coastal TW. The mag dial also has way too much tension and is difficult to turn. This was their workaround to the problem of the mag dial being inadvertently moved but this was never a problem until they made these stupid shaped TWS reels with the giant wide fronts. If my new one doesn't live up my my expectations then it is going back and I am getting a refund. It's a $250 msrp brass gear aluminum frame and sideplate reel. I expect near TD Zillion smoothness out of it when new at least. Welp. One of my Coastals has kind of gotten noisy over the last several days, out of the blue. Noticed a few days ago it was noisier than normal. Cleaned it, greased it, took it out today and the noise didn’t get any better, and may be worse. Little gear feeling, and pretty good “whiirrr”. It WAS a quiet reel. Why would it just start “whirring” all the sudden? Revo SX for noise comparison. Quote

The rod will dampen a lot of the gearyness. My replacement never showed and I inquired about having it refunded instead. No more Tatulas for me. I will also be highly suspect of Thailand Daiwas. I want to add a Zilllion HD to the lineup and that is it. All Japan proven platfroms from here on out new or used. I've had old beat to hell aluminum gear Alphas that were smoother an quieter than that. Without a “load” on the coastal (pulling a lure through the water) it doesn’t make any noise and feels smooth. So off the rod it’s not noticeable. I’m frustrated to say the least. My 2 month old Tat CT is geary, the cork on one of my two week old Tatula rods is moving on the blank, and now one of my Coastals has gone noisy. Even though not high end, I thought I was buying quality stuff. I mean the Coastals ARE $250 reels. Quote
