I’ve used Offset EWG Tex Posed exclusively in the past and want to try round bends.

With this style do you insert the hook at a 45 degree angle and put it back through the bait at the same angle leaving the point just below the surface? I watched a video on this subject, but it was a little hard to see. I tried it at home and the bait was straight so I think I had it right. Are hook ups better rigging the bait this way?

Thanks.....Joe

I like round bend, both straight shank and offset better than EWG hooks. I seem.to hook more fish with them. I do still use EWG hooks sometimes on thicker plastic worms

I use a round bend offset and leave the hook point in the center of the worm for coming through cover better. If your hookset is not punching through half a worm, you have no chance at penetrating the roof of the mouth..IMO. I think you'll like round bends but it is a preference thing. I know my hookups went up with them years ago.

Yeah, mine will be offset round bends.

So you do insert the hook at an angle to get the bait straight as opposed to straight down with an EWG?

I’ll be checking the gap and bait thickness.

If its rigged straight it's right

As for hookups that's gonna be personal preference

I prefer Mustad Grip-Pin Big Bite Hooks, I believe the 1X strong shank, 2X long shank, UltraPoint offer faster & more solid hookups.

I’ve used Gama EWGs a long time before switching to a round-bend hook (pros & cons on both sides).

Advantages of a round-bend hook include a very good hook-up ratio, self-centering trailers

(when nose-hooking), and not as damaging to fish as the sharp corner in an EWG bend.

Mustad Grip-Pin Big Bite

> Start the hook-point in the center of the worm's nose (which centers the bullet sinker)

> Push the point into the worm-head on a 30-deg angle, until it breaks out of the worm.

(It’ll break-out about 3/8” behind entry, depending on the size of the hook and bait, )

> In the usual manner, thread the worm down the shank and rotate it 180 degs

> Now push the worm head back over the hook-eye until the grip-pin emerges from the worm

(The grip-pin puts Superglue to shame)

> Now lay the hook over the worm and position it so the hook-point is just shy

of the worm's backline, now pinpoint the point-of-entry on the bottom of the worm.

(This is neither Tex-skinned nor Tex-posed, but a fully weedless Florida-style rig)

Ahh I see, straight in before angling the point!

I just got some Gammy hooks, but I like the idea of the grip pin. Gonna have to give the Mustads a shot!

Actually, with a Mustad grip-pin, the point is held at 30-degs throughout, so the bait lays-out straight

Delaying the penetration angle tends to kink the bait.

My hookup ratio is very good with round bend and very poor with ewg.  I’m sure others have just the opposite results but for my style it is 99% round bend offset and I do very well with them.

Heres how I do it . Push the point straight into the worm head, no angle at all, about 1/4 inch      . Then poke it out at close to a 90 degree angle . This , I feel ,makes for a straighter worm .

For 8" Jelly Worms I like the Mustad round bend offset 4/0 grip pin hook. It's a big hook and can deal with the fat head of the worm.

Hook up ratio is great. Other baits like beavers, and creatures I prefer Gammy off-set G-Lock and also EWG.
