Super User burleytog Posted July 17, 2007 Super User Posted July 17, 2007 I'm not much for judging treble size. Was throwing a DD22 Sunday morning, got a good fish on. Played it for a bit, had it close to the boat, then just slack line. Reeled it in, missing a hook on the rear treble. :'( Need to replace it before this weekend, just don't know what size of treble I need. If nothing else, I'll pull a hook off another bait. I do want to try to avoid whatever brand of hook is currently on the bait. It was a new DD22, had never been fished before that night. More than ticked me off since it was the biggest fish I had hooked all night. Quote
MattStrykul Posted July 17, 2007 Posted July 17, 2007 Burley, I'm having some bad luck with Norman D22 hooks as well. I had one fresh out the box and went fishing and about 10th cast had one on. Not too big, but the hooks just weren't that sharp to begin with. People say to change them. Goodluck finding size, sorry I was no help ;D Quote
Guest whittler Posted July 17, 2007 Posted July 17, 2007 Burley, i use #2 VMC on my DD22s, the originals are #2 but I don' know who makes them. Quote
norm2525 Posted July 17, 2007 Posted July 17, 2007 Hey a dd22 is a size #2. Likewise I don't know what kind they come with from the factory. Also, if you have a BPS catalog they usually list the size hook that comes with the lure. Thats how i see which one to put on. Quote
santeebasser24 Posted July 17, 2007 Posted July 17, 2007 I ALWAYS replace my trebbles w/ the daiichi bleeding bait trebbles! It always has done me real well and gives me a little more confidence when I get a fish hooked! Bait companies now days try to save a little on the terminal tackle, to make a little more profit! Super User senile1 Posted July 17, 2007 Super User Posted July 17, 2007 The original manufacturer doesn't matter. Get some Owner, Gamakatsu, or Daiichi replacements and you'll have a better bait. Quote
Super User burleytog Posted July 17, 2007 Author Super User Posted July 17, 2007 The thing is the hooks on the baits look a lot like a Gamakatsu. Hence the reason I want to avoid the original hooks. Quote
Super User 5bass Posted July 18, 2007 Super User Posted July 18, 2007 Not sure on the make of the DD22 stock hooks but I switch mine to VMC Sure Sets as soon as they come out of the package. Size 2. Quote
flyphisher # Posted July 18, 2007 Posted July 18, 2007 I replace almost all my hardbait hooks with Gamagatksu before they ever go in the tackle box. been doing that for years. On deep divers, i like a hook on the belly. one size smaller than suggested, on back one that is one size bigger. It works well, believe it or not. On my shallow cranks i put a red hook on the tail and my strikes/hookup increased compared to same bait with regular hooks. VMC Sure-set hooks = sure snag , for me anyway. Quote
Super User 5bass Posted July 19, 2007 Super User Posted July 19, 2007 The Sure Sets are intimidating to look at and you would think they are a snag waiting to happen. I have been using them since they came out and I havent noticed any more snags with them compared to regular trebles.....besides, if you crank enough, you're going to get hung no matter what hooks you have, its a fact of life. The confidence I have with that one big hook on the Sure Sets outweighs any thoughts of getting hung up. I like seeing a bass come up with the one big hook stuck all the way thru the lip. As for red hooks, I will generally put those in the belly. I believe if they will key on something like that, I'd rather them hit the middle of the bait instead of the back. That way if they miss the belly hook, I still have one set coming behind to stick 'em. Quote
flyphisher # Posted July 19, 2007 Posted July 19, 2007 FBL..As George Cochran says "Its all about subtle differences." 8-).Everybody that uses red hooks puts them on the belly, so i put some on the tail of some norman fatboys. Had several days it made the difference for some reason. The added flash/perceived action the red added really makes the fish mad when they are on that kind of bite. With bigger cranks i agree, the fish needs to hit the middle of the bait....a more compact bait, i think the fish gets the whole thing unless they are short-striking for some reason. Quote
