Bandersnatch Posted June 23, 2020 Posted June 23, 2020 What's your guys ultimate frog rod? I'm looking at a longer rod, current is a 7'6, I'm replacing it with something similar in length , I have shorter rod if I'm trying to pitch. Price can be as much or as little as possible. If there's a really high end rod that's fantastic I'd love to hear about it. I also know it's a frog rod and they make a lot of great budget ones. I have the 7'3xh expride for the heavy heavy stuff. I'm looking for something very light weight, longer and a soft enough tip to frog moderate cover, being multipurpose for items like a buzz bait is nice too. Quote
swhit140 Posted June 23, 2020 Posted June 23, 2020 I've been using a Falcon Expert "Froggin/Pitchin' 6'11" 1 Quote
JLewis134 Posted June 23, 2020 Posted June 23, 2020 Ultimately, I will state the most important thing IMO. A frog rod is a different rod to different people. A rod I would skip frogs under bushes on the river would not be the rod I use in mats. I recommend two different rods to be able to fish in those different circumstances. I use about a 3 different frog rods due to this. Price in mind? 1 Quote
Super User Tywithay Posted June 23, 2020 Super User Posted June 23, 2020 The ultimate is the Orochi X4 Destruction F6-72X4. It's shorter than what you're looking for though. Longer than 7'6", I'd look at the Tatula Elite AGS 'Long cast frog'. It's 7'9" and not many people know frogs as well as Ish. Never held that particular rod, but the 7'4" version is a excellent. All the Elite AGS rods I've used have been really nice crisp actions. 1 1 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted June 23, 2020 Global Moderator Posted June 23, 2020 I really like the Falcon Bucoo I've been using, it's a 7' 4" H/F. IDK the weight, but it balances well, launches a frog, has a shorter handle to make walking a frog easy, and has plenty of backbone to hammer the hooks home and drag them out. 1 Quote
Super User FryDog62 Posted June 23, 2020 Super User Posted June 23, 2020 The ALX Toadface is 7’2” and weighs approx 4.3 oz. MHF tip with a Heavy butt section... perfect frog tip but the backbone to “yank ‘em” out of the thick stuff. Walks dog great, skips exceedingly well... has always seemed long enough to get casting distance with the slightly softer tip too... ? 2 Quote

It is perfectly balanced and a breeze to walk all day. Balance before weight IMO. I've read the Steez is the ultimate frog rod. A penny or two over my budget, tho. Quote
Super User FishTank Posted June 23, 2020 Super User Posted June 23, 2020 I don't use it often for frogs but I like the G. Loomis 844C GLX when it comes to being lightweight. I primarily use the same rod in the IMX line up for frogs. The tip is not as soft as the GLX and it seems to have a little more backbone. It is also not as sensitive and a bit heavier but for whatever reason I have better hook ups with the IMX when it comes to frogs. 1 Quote

The gen 2 perfect pitch is a great choice as well. My buddy had a Toadface and had bad luck with hookups. Never fished it but he switched and is now much happier. Since you want a longer frog rod, I'd recommend a 74 H Legend Elite, 7'6 MB Valdivia, 7'7 H Expride, 7'6 H Steez AGS. If you like Dobyns, they have some options but I don't fish Dobyns. 1 1 Quote
Super User Teal Posted June 23, 2020 Super User Posted June 23, 2020 I know what I have...and it works well. But for me, the "ultimate frog rod" has to have the following things - soft tip - stiff enough to work the bait -big backbone - not a long handle - shorter than 7'6. 7ft to 7'3 works well...dont forget it is a top water lure that you are using the rod for action. - rod that works well as pitching stick, or sensitive enough flip or punch. If not not good flipping stick, at least have actions for for heavy moving baits. I cant afford to sink money in just a "frog rod" its gonna be pulling double duty frogging and whatever else. My powell 735 is used frigging, pitching, big topwater lures, and even over sized jerkbaits. ...so pretty much everything after big topwaters die off. Really good football jig rod. So what brand and model is that.... I dont know.... but I like mine. 1 Quote
Born 2 fish Posted June 23, 2020 Posted June 23, 2020 I use a original tatula 7’4 frog rod it’s great I’m sure the new ones are just as good. 1 Quote
fishindad Posted June 23, 2020 Posted June 23, 2020 According to your original post, you want a rod longer than your present 7'6" H? I've not used it but would think the 7'9" Ish Monroe AGS frog rod would be exactly what you want. https://www.daiwa.com/us/contents/rods/tatula_elite/index.html Otherwise iRod makes a bunch of Genesis II rods longer than 7'6" that might work. Dreveal Posted June 23, 2020 Posted June 23, 2020 I will give a second vote for the ALX Toadface. Really versatile rod. 1 Quote

Ogandrews Posted June 24, 2020 Posted June 24, 2020 If you want a softer 7’6” rod than it would be really hard to beat the g loomis/Shimano conquest 7’6” heavy, also comes in a xh but it’s rated 3/4-3oz so probably really heavy. The NRX comes in an 894 and 895, 7’5” heavy and xh. I’ve got the imx pro version of the 894 and love it, used it for frogs in really light cover before and it worked great, also a good rod for a 168 s waver if you need to throw one in a pinch. If you could find one in stock somewhere the new st croix legend extreme comes in a 7’4” heavy, haven’t fished one myself but from everything I’ve heard they would be on par with the two loomis rods. 1 Quote
KP Duty Posted June 24, 2020 Posted June 24, 2020 I'm looking to order the Poison Glorious 6-9XH as my walking frog stick. 117g. 14-150g lure weight. Comes in a 7-4 also (135g) 1 Quote
