Ok.  Someone help a brotha out.  For some reason, I cannot get this little booger to “walk” across the water.  I have it tied on with a loop knot, but it acts like it’s been shot and paralyzed on one side.  I have other Heddon Spooks that are bigger and can walk them all day.  Do any of you use one of these in the “Puppy” size?.  What size rod and line should I be using for this bait?

My first thought is be more gentle with it but you might have gotten a factory reject

I use Zara Puppies more than the other Spook models, I find they walk best with 8lb mono on a spinning rod.  All the ones I have walk the same as their bigger brothers, if yours isn't, it may have a defect like TNRiver said.

Spinning rod and 8lb test, even 6lb if you're comfortable with it. I have one with the paint almost completely beat off of it from fishing creeks and catching so many fish on it.

What size rod are you using? And what power?

I’m probably going against the grain compared to most of these guy but for on the river for Smallies I’m using a spinning 6 foot medium action with a moderate fast tip. Using Mono. For small spooks, chug bugs and pop-r types it works fantastic.

I actually found one of these lures a few weeks ago.

Going to try it this weekend with all the great advice above.

Always reel and twitch and keep the slack ,most people think they need alot of slack they don’t reel and the bait just goes forwards

I agree, it's all about the slack line management and adjusting your cadence to the length of the bait.

The best creek top water. I only use 8lb mono. I found 6lb too light, it tangled up, and 10lb too heavy.
