Super User BrianinMD Posted March 16, 2009 Super User Posted March 16, 2009 Not being mechanically inclined has its definite disadvantages... Dropped my boat off at the shop, will cost about 500 bucks to have a few things done to get ready for the season. Impeller, lower unit oil, trailer bearings, and a transom saver added... oh well, guess that means I just need to use it more often to justify the cost..... Quote

Impeller, lower unit oil, trailer bearings, and a transom saver added... oh well, guess that means I just need to use it more often to justify the cost..... That's about twice what you have listed should cost. Lower unit 125-150 Bearings 100-125 L/U oil 30 Transom saver 20-40 Heck you can buy a transom saver for 20 or so at walmart, put in your own L/U oil(Takes 10 minutes) for 9.95, bearings(Heck you can buy hubs ready to go for 36.95 ea. and these are the 5 lug 4 1/2 bolt pattern.) Smaller ones are cheaper. You need to check around. Heck if you have a two wheel trailer that's 80.00 Here's how to do it. Jack it up Take wheel off Knock off dust cover Take out cotter pin Unscrew nut Slide hub off Repeat above in reverse order and your done with trailer Lower unit oil: Trim motor down Unscrew top screw(Located on the left(Passenger side) of the lower unit. Take it completely out. Change washer if needed Lower screw is located near the bottom of the lower unit on same side. Put drain pan under the L/U. Remove screw and inspect for metal shavings and check to see if fluid is white or milky in color. If not take the bottle of L/U oil and stick it into the lower hole and squeese bottle until oil starts running out the top hole. Replace both screws and your done(Unless the fluid is off color. Then you have seal problems and it does need to go to the shop). You have now completed three of the above for about 125.00. And that's if you buy new hubs and it's a two wheel trailer. If you feel adventuerous we can even talk you through the changing of the water pump impeller. I don't think you are quite ready for that one though. Good luck Quote
DawsonH Posted March 18, 2009 Posted March 18, 2009 Don't forget he can DIY the transom saver also. Quote
