Jnizzy Posted June 23, 2020 Posted June 23, 2020 hey there, I was using this reel to cast 3/4oz w/ trailer chatterbaits over grass, my bait kept on getting caught in grass so I was constantly ripping it free and think I may have damaged my reel somehow as it now makes a buzzing / humming when drag is being pulled. I have attached a video of my reel and the sound it is making below for you guys to have a better diagnosis. https://youtu.be/KC7iojgSzH0 Quote
diehardbassfishing Posted June 23, 2020 Posted June 23, 2020 Looks like the line is digging into the spool at higher drag settings. Looks like using braid. The experienced braid folks will chime in. Shooting from the hip on the potential braid issue; I'd guess line is too thin. Reel is OK. Karl Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted June 23, 2020 Posted June 23, 2020 Something isn’t right there. Can’t diagnose just from the video though. Doesn’t sound like line noise from here. 1 Quote
Jnizzy Posted June 23, 2020 Author Posted June 23, 2020 Line is not digging in. I lubed the spool ring as well as the magnetic brake ring and the sound and vibration of the reel is a lot less violent than in the video so I suspect there is another dry area within the reel Quote
matbellon3 Posted June 23, 2020 Posted June 23, 2020 It almost sounds like the drag stack is wet or has moister on it. One of my Curados sounded like that after a kayak flip. New drag washers that I had laying around and a service fixed it. 1 Quote
DomQ Posted June 23, 2020 Posted June 23, 2020 Looks like you spooled that reel up with a lot of line. Anyway you can open up the reel? Hows that fancy magseal bearing feel? Quote
Jnizzy Posted June 23, 2020 Author Posted June 23, 2020 Drag stack was indeed wet. Cleaned and relubed everything and she is back to being normal ?. Sure did, the reel holds a lot of line.... I've been using this reel for about a year mainly for chinook salmon and heavy lures and besides this one incident she has held up very well. I hate to say it but it actually feels more smooth than my old steez a tw... Quote

I have the JDM 1516 version with the shallow spool and it's definitely one of the smoothest daiwa reels I've used and has held up well. Glad you figured it out. Quote
