I have a pfluger President spinning reel and when I reel in the line after a cast the spool is supposed to go up and down to evenly lay the line across the spool. But my spool very oftenly skips a little bit so the spool while I am reeling will go up and down then jump a little bit. And occasionally the spool will stop moving up and down and just lay line in the middle of the spool. I looked up and tried to find the issue and it told me to check and make sure the *** on the oscillating gear wasn’t broken and even though it wasn’t broken the screw there was very loose so I tightened it up. I thought this would solve the problem but the spool still skips when it goes up and down. Anyone have any clue what may be causing the spool to not go up and down smoothly like it should?

Have you had the spool off the reel recently?

Yes I have, I took the spool off the reel when I took apart the reel to try and fix it. I also took all the line out and restrung the line so I know it is not a line issue.

Only thing I can think of is the oscillating slide coming off the oscillating gear. Make sure that its riding on it (on the pin) and not just sliding over the top.

How long have you had the reel.  I've used spinning gear since the 70's and I've had a couple of reels that couldn't be fixed.  They we're just line eaters.  Fill them up with new line, fish a couple of times, spool is so bumpy & tangled that the line is unusable.   I have an old Mitchell that is that way, the first generation of skirted spool reels after they'd marketed the 300 basically forever - that first generation of skirted spool reels weren't a quality product.  I have a few more thrown into the one eater box, but I can't recall the brand right now.

The box is labeled LINE EATER REELS and I'm unlikely to ever open that box again.  I don't want to release the spirit of the line eaters into my fishing shed.  That 's the same reason I don't throw them away, the reel might escape and do more damage.  Right now, and for the past 30 years, it had been contained in a box where it can't hurt anything.

Ona serious note, it that reel didn't always do it, something is broke and it is probably fixable by someone who knows what they are doing.   That ain't me.  I'd just buy a new reel at that point.

Not sure which model it is -- there are reel schematics at Pflueger website    https://www.pfluegerfishing.com/Reel-Schematics/reel-schematics,default,pg.html..  But as @garroyo130 has suggested, perhaps the slider is not fitted to the oscillating gear.

So, as a brief diversion before getting back to the solution, what reels are in your LINE EATER REELS box, @Fishes in trees ?
